Another suggestion I received from a friend (and from my dad a few months ago but I brushed it off... - stupid me)... the +12VDC source to the HEI distributor's BAT connection may have a bad connection or wire causing high resistance and poor current flow- which may also explain the heat sensitivity. He said if that wire had high resistance, the current needed to reach the distributor may not get there and therefore may cause the coil to loose spark intensity and the module to not fire properly, which may cause me to loose timing. I looked at the wire and sure enough, its got a bad crimp, and its old and rotten.

Tomorrow, comes a new +12VDC wire to the coil.

I am strong, I am patient, and I WILL PREVAIL! :D

    Updates tomorrow night....

I rewired the +12vdc wire to the coil last night, put everything back together, and sure enough, the same problem was there.

I'm just going to time the fugger by ear so it runs good without knocking until I A) sell the truck or B) find the money to yank the engine and rebuild it from the ground up.

Thanks to all those who helped!

Did you make sure the timing marks on the timing chain sprockets where lined up? Had this happen one time with a three way adjustable keyway and it ran like crap. Also (if I didn't miss it in a previous post)try checking the timing with another light, preferrably not a dial back one. Sometimes those lights get funky too.

        Good luck -

Sorry for exhuming a dead thread, but I think I figured something out on my truck's timing! At least a consistancy.. Give me all of your opinoins on the following

The timing is more retarded when its cold, more advanced when it's warm. It lags behind as revs increase

I've changed everything relating to ignition timing, yet the problem persists......

BUT, the oil pump runs off the distriubutor shaft. Oil is more viscous when cold, therefore requires more work of the oil pump than when the oil is warm & more fluid. As revs increase, so does oil pressure..... So, if my oil pump was not working 100% properly, it could in theory, be dragging the distributor shaft behind and causing the lag & heat-sensitive timing inacuracies.

maybe your oil pressure regulator valve is stuck closed? that would emphisize your theory.
