• Why can regrinds get higher specs than cores?

Why is it that Regrind cams can get much higher specs then a comp core grind. Comp told me they dont fo anything over 212 but supersix will grind a 220/228 that is a mean cam with .510 lift. Does that mean you can get more aggresive with a regrind and get much higher specs. I really want a cam and im tired of waiting for comp to get theie cores in. Please let me know what the big deal is between a regrind and a comp core grind. Thanks

COMP has nothing off the shelf for 212.. you can custom your own grind though.

This is the list I pick from:
http://www.compcams.com/catalog/230.html

In the first section. My lobes are 3312.

I HIGHLY recomend against a regrind with big duration... Your ramps will be so slooooow. :( You will be missing out on a lot of HP that you can only get from a core grind.. COMP ramps are fasssst!!

Doesnt matter much really because the only option we have is a regrind. Unless you are going to wait atleast 1 month or more.

To answer your question, with a regrind, they litterally grind down the base circle to give it more lift and then can also acheive higher duration specs. I was listening to the engines running these "monster" cams and unless you have a monster torque converter, I would personally stay away from an automatic tranny. There wouldn't be a lot of vacuum signal and there could be an engine stalling problem. I personally an only talking from old school engine experience though, and I really don't have any experience with our computer V6s.

Magnus, I know that you run a 212/212 112LS but on that Chart, how do you find out the exhuast duration, or is it identical to the intake for all those grinds.

I plan on going with a 212/218 112LS and I was wondering how to pick that out of the chart.

Thanks and please forgive me for my ignorance

thats a chart of lobes.. you pick which you want for intake and which you want for exhaust.

I just got a email from comp cams saying they have the cores i believe. here is the messege i recieved:

Kris,
we do have a core for this engine it is available in custom grinds only the
cost would be 304.14 , the wait on custom grinds is 2-3 weeks at this time.

this is from a tech at comp cams. So maybe they do have the cores in stock if so i am purchaseing one next week i have been weaiting for quite a while now i need a mean aggressive cam spec that will alow me to sit at idel and not stall out through some ideas at me. I want something that nobody has at the moment and i want a split cam with a choppy idel one u can tell has a cam in it.

Dont do it! They gave me the same story so I ordered the cam. They ended up sending me the wrong cam. You should call back and ask for a manager or supervisor. They will give you the real 411. Im getting a CROWER regrind directly through CROWER for $125. I am thinking I will do 214/214 500/500 112LS 108IC. They said with overnight delivery they can get me my cam by Fri or sat. I really need my cam fast so this is the only thing for me right now. I am not waiting 4 weeks.

Preston, how about throwing the stocker back in for a while and then getting a COMP later?

A COMP i think should be worth 20hp across the board over a regrind and would idle smoother.

A cam only swap could be done in 8 hours I think. Just last week I tore down my engine in 1.5 hours leaving the heads and front cover on with zach's help. half an hour more and I could have had the front cover off.

Just a thought.

I dont know what to do. My mechanic is charging me labor for this either way. He already has the stock cam out. So I might as well spend the extra $125 for a cam now and If I dont like it I can get a compcam later. There is no way I can wait 4 weeks for another cam. I have waited long enough.
