  • Need Help On Engine

Hi hows it going my 1999 firebird has recently spun a main bearing.
I belive coolant got into the system which caused the bearing to spin through a leaking head, i checked the gasket over
and over and could not find a crack but there was what looked to be alout of rust on the one head. Ive onyl had the car for 2 weeeksso dont knwo alout about prices on the stuff it needs but i figured im going need

1.New bearings 85.00 for rod and main
2.Grind down the crank or turn it
3.My dad wants a new cam cause the engine has 125,000 miles on it but is saw all the cams were
like 300 dollars so if anyone know where i cheaper ones are let me know
    4. New head if it is cracked or vavle job
5.Gasket kit hopefully GM makes a complete one
    6. New piston rings
    7. New freeze plugs

So im going need all this plus labor does anyone know how much they think all this would cost, or does anyone know if it would be cheaper to go with a new long block so i can have new heads. I didnt really want to spend more than 800-1000$. I know a long block is really high but maybe someone knows a discount place. And i also im only looking for stock parts not performance well maybe just a perfromance cam but not psiton or rods or lifters at this point i just want he thing to run lol

i got a great idea go to a junk yard and buy a series 2 3800 motor and drop it in. Look for a 99 if you can get a 99 it should drop right on in. Less work then rebuilding your current motor and not really worth it unless you were gonna go all out race motor but still you can get a junk yard motor for 500 bucks if even that and it should drop in with out a problem the max you might have to do is change intakes.

If you wanted a high performance cam to put in get the gt cam if you dont wanna change anything else.

just read the rest of your post

get a junkyard motor for like 500 bucks only way its gonna cost less then what you wanna spend. Also leaves some money left over for ends and odds that might need to be replaced IE hoses, belt, plugs, wires, oil, coolant.

A new motor would cost a couple grand if you could find one

theres no way you can rebuild that motor and spend less then you want or it would be a real pain. depending how bad the bottem end is messed up.

for cam i would go with www.3800performance.com they sel cam, springs, install kit. get clevite 77 bearings

you can get a performance cam (and like your car pbetter in the end for about the same price as stock) get a new ring kit, (only thing you need to bore/hone the motor)

i would say do it right, i'm in the middle of rebiuld right now i know what places have better prices, just emial me or ask here

            heres what i would do
            new rings ~100
            bearings ~80
            new head bolt (dont know)
            new cam ~300
plus labor to bore motor and install new cam bearings (dont have to do cam bearing but if one goes out........)
REAPLACE THE LIFTERS i repeat replace the lifters.

1000 will be vary hard but dont cut any corners

Where in Texas are you? I can get you a GOOD reman motor for a decent price. It'll come with a fat warranty that covers labor and the engine itself (towing tooo!). Don't bother rebuilding it unless your doing it yourself, it's gonna cost you substantially more than your budget (prolly like 2500-3000 bux).
