  • what is wideband

what is a wideband sensor or whatever and what is it used for? is it better to get than an air/fuel gauge? is it used for tuning?

Narrowband sensors (ie, the stock oxygen sensors) are only accurate at 14.7:1 AFR. Anything other than that will only tell you if it's lean or rich. At WOT, you want to be around 13:1 NA, maybe 12:1 or so with a power adder. With a narrowband sensor, you could be at 10:1 or 14.5:1 and you could get the same reading. That makes it stupid to use it for tuning.

A wideband sensor is accurate across a wide range of values. It'll tell you exactly what your AFR is.

It's only a sensor...you still need a gauge to display the value read from it.

as my esteemed coleague already mentioned a wideband sensor and gauge are used for tuning. It typicaly requires that a sensor boss be welding at where the exhaust comes together and before the CAT. (in our case at the Y pipe) This boss is where the wideband sensor is mounted. The sensor can then be wired to a dash mounted gauge or feed to a scanner on a dyno perhaps. many possibilities.

It does not replace any parts or sensors on the car. It is a extra system.

check this out if you are interested. there is also a link to some multimedia files regarding widebands.

It's really only usefull if you're tuning the car yourself. If you're not tuning it yourself, you don't need one unless you're really curious what your AFR is.
