more power? What if it pings and pulls timing? that would make less power

If I need more power at partial throttle, I'll give it more throttle. When I need more and hit WOT, EGR shuts off, sounds fine to me. Keeps me from pinging too. Doesn't bother me much at all, one of the few pollution controls that works ok. If I end up getting a cam with lots of overlap though, I will remove it.

The EGR isn't there to control pinging, although it's purpose is to cool combustion temperatures, but to keep Nitrous of Oxides (NOx) down in the exhaust.

As to how to avoid the SES by blocking/bypassing the EGR, the service manual is very helpful here, I just wish I would have read it before.

According to the service manual, say the exhaust stays balanced enough that the PCM never needs to add EGR gasses to the mixture, the PCM will still open the EGR valve at regular intervals, to verify that it's working. The PCM verifies that the EGR valve is working by looking for an increase in manifold pressure (drop in manifold vacuum).

So, if you remove the EGR from the exhaust manifold, and hook it up somewhere that it can pull air (the air intake), then there should still be slight change in manifold vacuum, apparently enough to make the PCM happy (did the software geniuses at GM actually give us a break for a change?). A place that could puts some pressure behind the air might be better, so perhaps some type of a pump, a small electric one maybe, using a PCV breather filter to draw air through?

You guys might want to get in on this beta test http://www.clubgp.com/newforum/tm.as...mode=1&smode=1

Also, I'll be honest I have not read the ENTIRE thread so i'm not sure if this has been brought up (Probably has) what I did for a long time was remove the tubing from the exhaust and put a small K&N filter on the end of the EGR inlet and blocked off the hole in the header. Worked like a champ.

I was doing a search to fix my EGR leak and noticed this. I was wondering if anything else has come about for this? Any new idea's, problems, etc... (I am talking mostly about the rerouting of the egr tube)

Ok... for the last time. The egr ONLY opens at cruising speeds. You will see no difference at WOT, or idle. It makes absolutely NO sense to consider this a performance mod of any kind.

Those of us with HP Tuners software can delete the EGR function in the PCM can't we? Might be a thing to do if you send your PCM into TSP for some computer work or if you have the VCM Suite.

I wasnt talking about performance gains. Sorry I didnt specify. I have a EGR leak that I have tried fixing a couple times without good results.
That is the only reason I was asking.

Actually, you can see a perf gain, it is in weight reduction

I know a lot about the EGR, not because I been trying to delete it, but rather fix it.

Here is a diagram from a service manual,,now we can
refer to this. Teal can you make it an image rather than a link?

1- Pipe from exhuast manifold and mounting point for valve.
8- EGR Gasket
9- EGR Valve
11- Sensor Plug

If you disconnect the EGR Valve, you will probably set P1404.

Here is the info about what electrical circumstances sets the SES DTC code.

Circuit Description

The PCM monitors the EGR valve pintle position input to ensure that the valve responds properly to commands from the PCM. When the ignition switch is turned ON, the PCM learns the EGR closed valve pintle position. The PCM compares the learned EGR closed valve pintle position to the Actual EGR position when the EGR valve is commanded closed. If the Actual EGR position indicates that the EGR valve is still open when the PCM is commanding the EGR valve closed, DTC P1404 will set.
Conditions for Running the DTC

System voltage is above or equal to 10 volts.
Conditions for Setting the DTC

* EGR Feedback is 0.2 volt greater than the EGR Closed Valve Pintle Position when the Desired EGR Position is commanded to 0%
* The above condition is present for around 20 seconds.

I have a diagram of the EGR Electrical Schematics, if anyone is interested.

Another reason to remove an EGR is when putting in a turbo system for forward swept headers. I removed mine to free up some space in the engine compartment, it doesn't seem like much but it really helped to open it up.

The tube and egr are fine. I just can't get that white gasket tightened down enough to keep it from leaking. I have tried taking it off and resetting it, bending it this way and that way... Just won't stay tight.
