  • GT2 cam swap

well i got my new engine dropped in. I started installing the camshaft and everything was going smooth. But then i got the thrust plate for the camshaft, and i got one of the torx bolts out no problem, the other one stripped so easily. Its been a while sense ive been into a 3.8 engine and i forgot how fragile and easy those bolts strip. So i ended up drilling it out and replacing the bolt. Everything is now back together and went together pretty good. Im hoping to have this engine running by wed. Im still waiting for the intake manifold i purchased but im sure it will be here next week sometime.

I still have alot of work to do. I need to drop in the transmision and rewire the pcm. For those of you who dont know i am going from a LT1 swap back to a v6. So i have my work cut out for me this week.

Also i was wondering if any of you run LT1 injectors. I have a spare set and im thinking of putting them in. My only other option is the bosch injectors out of the 2002. Im not a big fan of those style injectors.

LT1 is not as fuel efficient or reliable as a 3800. That would be my guess for the swap. Hope it goes well for you.

Did the exact same thing. Scared the crap out of me. :(

There's a few people here that run LT1 injectors. They're only 24 lbs, though, compared to our stock 22s. Not really a big difference. I will be going with GTP 36ers very soon, since I'm at 95% duty cycle with the stockers.

double check the compatibility between 2002 injectors and the lt1 injectors. if your 2002 v6 is from an f body then it has multec2 style injectors. they use a different harness plug as well as they are 4mm shorter than standard bosch injectors. (pre 2000)

            t-punk,
if your gonna modify your 3800
your not gonna get as good gas mileage anyways.
so it'd be about the same as a v8(only v8 is like 300 lbs more)
what do you mean that v6 is more reliable than v8?
            thnx

Thus is why im using my stock 98 wire harness, pcm, fuel rail and injectors. Only the engine is 2002, all the electronics are from my 98. I swapped over the intake and TB also.

But i remember one of my stock 98 injectors ticking. So im thinking about throwing in these LT1 injectors. Do you think i will have to get my pcm re-tuned after putting these in? Or will it be close enough to stock size so it wont matter?

                I wouldn't do it without a reprogram.
The computer uses sensors like the MAF sensor, to measure air flow, and then uses table to decide fuel pulse width. The tables are calibrated to the stock injectors. The o2 sensors will trim it some, but it will always be a little off.

                Will it run? Yes.
Will it run as effeciently as it should? No.

most of the modified V6es i've seen still get 20-25 mpg. start modding an LT1 or LS1 (especially an automatic) and you're looking at less than 20 mpg even with a good tune.

the 3.8 sips gas and rarely breaks, but the price you pay is being slow.

My V6 gets like 19 or less. It sucks lol. It might run different with the new tune though.

Well the LT1's i know rarely get close to 20mpg highway and get around 13-15 in town, I get 20mpg in town and close to 30mpg highway. A modded 3800 will still get better mileage than an LT1 (maybe not an LS1). Also as for reliability, there are few engines that you will ever find that are more reliable than the 3800. I got a friend with 300k miles on his supercharged 3800II and its still ticking away with no problems.
