  • Is this able to be done?

My friends dad works in a mechanics shop and knows that I am somewhat testing the waters of getting a V8. He has fount 2 engines that will be sold to him (i'll pay him and he'll pay the guy) dirt cheap, I'm not real sure the exact price I will post that once I get the price. There is a 350 4-bolt that is carburated and needs to be overhauled....he also has a friend that he works with that will overhaul it for him real cheap because they throw each other business all the time so they cut deals and stuff. He told me he is going to get that price too so again i'll post about it when i get it. I am going to be able to go on and get a cam assuming that is the route i choose to go and he'll put it in and everything and it could be bored...the optiuons go on and on. It is carburated (sp). I know absolutely nothing about carbs but am researching them as much as possible. I was curious about hp and torque and things like that of course. Also will it even fit in my car and how much trouble would it be. the other engine I know nothing about i just kjnow it is a 327. He is suppose to get back to me on. Is a 327 even a good option??? It would be dirt cheap as well. He is going to talk to everyone he can and find out all the prices and stuff for me and then i'll post what information I get. I was just wanting to know ahead of time if it is even going to work with a stock hood and if it was worth it to do. I didnt want to have him calling all these ppl if it was pointless to think about because I want to keep my hood and all. Thanks in advance.

Edit: I can't believe I forgot this but what sort of transmission would I need. I'm sure my stock one won't work?

I think with all the money you'd spend converting everything in your car for that carbuerated engine you might as well do an LT1 or LS1 swap, it would probably be cheaper.

I agree with that.. or go with a fuel injected motor like an LT1, LT4, or LS1 if you really want to swap.

I think it's gonna be cheaper to do the carb motor. You can get into a built 350 motor, 4 bolt mains, long block complete from carb to pan for under $2500. That's already modded. Then the work to get it in, possibly a cowl hood to make the carb and breather fit. People haven't ever seen it, so they assume it'll cosy WAY too much, but it will be about the same labor as an LS1 swap.

          You still need a trans.

You can get a complete LS1 for the same price.

Don't forget about the distributor. On small blocks it's on top at the rear of the engine. Not very practicable in a 4th gen.

One thing i guess to factor into my costs is that I WILL NOT have to pay labor.

Out of curiosity what would you do with all the computer controlled stuff in your car? Speedometers etc... Trying to mount it up, along with the transmission. They prbobably wouldn't "just drop in" How are you going to hook up all your engine components you'd probaby have to get all new stuff. How much HP/TQ is the engine making? I'm telling you, you'd be better off just buying an LT1 and a Tranny.
