  • GRRRRR! 3.4 Cam Trouble

Alright I've been doing a lot of research and I've searched this board a dozen times. I live in Cali (should I just give up now) and want a cam for a 95 3.4L that has the extra lobe for the cam trigger and this cam has to be emissions legal. I found a good selection of cams here:

    FTPP
(From what I've been reading about it looks like Viper98885 is named Josh and owns this company, so maybe you can help me out with these cams)

    GM Parts Direct

I've read a lot about the Crane Powermax 2030 cam and the fact that it's emissions legal kicks ***, but it apparently doesn't have the cam trigger lobe. This cam sounds good to me, and the picture has the extra lobe, but I don't want to trust the picture...

So, I want the best possible performance without having to P&P my heads and without having to duke it out with the smog laws, and I don't want to have a problem with the cam trigger. If none of those cams listed won't work does anyone know of a cam that will meet my requirements? If there's no other option, is there a way to get a custom cam?

Also if I can find a cam with the extra lobe, are there ways to tell if a cam will pass smog? Is it something like a small LSA or short duration?

If anyone can offer any help and tell me any information about any of the cams listed that would be greatly appreciated, because me senior project is getting closer and I need to chose a cam soon.

You need a good tune up to pass emissions. Power full ignition will help too.
The only things that will give you more power while changing emissions the least. P&P, headers, roller stuff and less ring tension.
P&P is the best thing you can do to for these engings.
The crane power max 2030 cam isn't much bigger than stock.
If you raise compression that will help you burn the stuff better.
A short duration narrow LSA cam? That would be a stock cam.
There is no way to tell if a cam will pass emissions by looking at the specs unless it is a mechanical roller cam then you know it won't pass.
It depends on C/R, ignition & timing, A/F, intake design, condition of cats if you have them, operating temp, plugs, quality of fuel, cond. of the small amount of oil that gets burned each power stroke or oil controal and more.
Over lap is what you need to stay away from to keep good emissions, unless you up C/R.
My cardomain siteis all about the 3.4 engine.
    It has cylinder head page.
    A fuel system page.
An intake page with some cool tools.
And a new recipricating and rotating assy. page.

The 2030 doesnt have the notch for the cam trigger. That extra lobe is for a car the older style motor with a Dis. The cam sensor thing is kinda like a block not a lob.. I have the 2030 in my car dont get it..

so i guess instead of asking for a cam that is smog legal, which cams have the cam trigger for the 3.4? I've seen cams from Comp, Crane, Crower, GM, Lunati, and Edelbrock for the 60* V6, but which of those have the cam trigger?

I know for a fact that the Comp, Lunati, GM and Edelbrock cams all have the cam trigger.

As for a 50-state legal cam, you would probably have to do a custom cam. You could probably get away with running the small Lunati or small Comp shelf cam with some ignition upgrades and a good Cat and you would be fine.

This is what I've been looking at from GM:
                http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/perform...CATID=231.html

That description says its from the 3.4L conversion package, so that doesn't necessarily mean it will work on the 3.4...

Also what will a custom cam cost? That might be my only option...

That GM cam is for carbed, TBI and MPIF appications, it stops at SFI.
That's why I love my MPIF it's fuel injection with out the fat.
There are a lot of 4X4 cams out there too, that you could use. There kind of small and will pass emissions.
Califoria is F***ed up that's all there is to it, if I ever get stationed there both my cars and half my guns and some of my ammo would be "illigal" there.
BTW my cars are 50 state illigal any way.

The gearing on the rear of the cam was for the distributor. You would be okay with that cam if you want to go that route. Does anyone have the Crane part number for the 2030 cam because I am looking on their website and don't see any for the 60* V6 that are Cali legal.

EDIT: Nevermind, I found that 2030 cam, but it states on the Crane website that it is NOT emissions legal.

K, did a little more research on the cams...
The Edelbrock 3790 cam has almost the exact same specs as the Crane 2030 cam and it's cheaper and has the cam trigger.

The Lunati 06312 cam has almost the same specs as the Crane 2020 cam and again is cheaper.

The Summit site lists that the cam is 50-state legal, but the Crane lists that neither are 50-state legal. I would take the manufacturers suggestion on this one.

my dad's vette is cammed and his mechanic simply adjusted the timing to make his car pass smog. can this be done on my car to allow it to pass smog so that i don't need to worry about this crap?

You could get the Cloyes adjustable timing set when you do the cam. That will allow for +4, -4 and standard timing.

Honestly, with one of the smaller cams, a good ignition system, a good catalytic converter and an engine that is tuned up, you will be okay on the smog tests.

alright this is that powermax 2030 cam on summit:

                            http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...+400078+309529

they say its emissions legal and the picture even shows the cam trigger...so deceiving :(

also the gear in the back is required for the oil pump so its still used on the DIS 3.4
