im getting my head gasket changed, and the mechanic was telling me the total cost of everything which was $1100. he included that the heads were going to get milled. will i gain any power from this? also should i spend a lil extra money on getting the heads polished? how much more power will i get from polished heads ?

milling the heads flat to get a good mating surface is different than milling them for more compression. Milling them for a better surface is only taking off 0.01" or so - nothing that will add much hp...
Talk to him if you want the compression raised...2002 5-spd NBM Camaro

screw that, 1100 dollars. I'd tell the bastard to jump in a river. Come on guy, the Super Six heads are waayyyy less than that, why don't you just get them. For 1100 you can have the intake ported and polished to match the heads too.1 of a kind
Red 97 Camaro
Modifications:
SLP CAI, RK Sport Headers, Car Sound High Flow Cat, 3\" piping
3\" Steel driveshaft, SFC\'s, Panhard Rod, MAC Torque Arm
Manual Fan Switch
Best E/T:
60\' 2.152
330 6.271
1/8th 9.704
MPH 71.93

exactly..1100 w/o the labor. labor will cost another 8-1000 which then will be 2 grand if not more...
so tiago to get them ported and polished it will be another $500? will it be worth my spending?
this is the perfect time to do this, thats why i want to know for sure that i will be a happy camper 94 3.4L A4 white t-tops
moroso cai
3\"hi-flow pacestter exhaust
b&m shift kit
catco cat
01 T/A rear w/ 3.73\'s and posi
1 pc aluminum ds
blacked out signals

Is it $1100 for the head gasket and labor??
I've gotten a set of heads worked on (in town) for ~$250. Granted, all they did was a 3 angle valve job and I ended up selling them to someone for $200, but thats beside the point
I suggest getting a modded set of heads--since you're having to tear that far down anyways. Either go super six, or find a set from a salvage yard (or even ebay sometimes) and take them to a reputable shop to be ported and polished. Then have your guy install those instead.Justin
1998 Camaro Z28 M6
1985 Pontiac Fiero M5
1999 Pontiac Firebird A4
AIM: FTBvideo
\"Music\'s what I need to keep my sanity!\" --S.A Martinez, 311

just go with supersix and find someone else to do the labor if you have to have someone do it. That guy sounds like he's trying to rip you off, that's a hell of a lot of money for doing that. I was quoted from a speed shop for the heads being ported, polished, 3 angle valve job, and a custom ground cam for 800. Thats a total too. So spend your money wisely. You'll also be doing everyone else a favor by going to supersix because not a lot of people have the package.
Let us know what you do. :cool:1 of a kind
Red 97 Camaro
Modifications:
SLP CAI, RK Sport Headers, Car Sound High Flow Cat, 3\" piping
3\" Steel driveshaft, SFC\'s, Panhard Rod, MAC Torque Arm
Manual Fan Switch
Best E/T:
60\' 2.152
330 6.271
1/8th 9.704
MPH 71.93

guys..my car is already apart...i dont have a lot of time to think about this..if i was going to go w/ the super six...how long would that take to get?? also i understand that the mechanic WILL make money..they always do...but i know he is a good guy and the total parts will be about 300 beans and the labor is the rest, which is like 9-10 hours at 60 bux an hour...its gotta be a pain in the *** job to do..so i think $1100 is pretty good. now if i can get the heads ported, i will. but i dont have time to go for the package...i need a car.94 3.4L A4 white t-tops
moroso cai
3\"hi-flow pacestter exhaust
b&m shift kit
catco cat
01 T/A rear w/ 3.73\'s and posi
1 pc aluminum ds
blacked out signals

he is milling the heads so you don't come back in a couple of weeks with a leaking, or blown head gasket. The guy is doing the right thing. Man to be honest I'd just let him get the car fixed and back on the road. Don't worry with porting the heads for now. It sounds like you are really just looking to get your car back in running order. If you blew a head gasket or something, he is milling the heads to make sure you have a flat and true mating surface. And guys correct me if I am wrong but the supersix package is for 3.8's this guy has a 3.4-Brad

time to port??.. well that all depends on who is doing them. If you have someone that knows what they are doing they could port both heads in an afternoon. Just depends on how fast they remove the material and how good they are. Usually at a machine shop, or at least a busy one there is some kind of wait. You will have to wait in line and such. Plus to know if you did any good, you would want the heads put on a flow bench to see before and after numbers to see if it did any good... Or at least I would want before and after numbers to justify spending the money.

i talked to my mechanic and he said he talked to the shop and they said that porting the heads really wouldnt make that big of a difference...he said the heads are realy goos as is...but he alos mentioned that a cam would be really sweet to throw in....does anyone know where i can find a cam quick ...like in the next day or 2?? i know that i can order1 from crane for $159 and will take alteast a week to receive...it is 2 steps above stock so it will add like 10-15 hp. does anyone know any better solution to my needs?94 3.4L A4 white t-tops
moroso cai
3\"hi-flow pacestter exhaust
b&m shift kit
catco cat
01 T/A rear w/ 3.73\'s and posi
1 pc aluminum ds
blacked out signals
