  • 3400 aluminum head help

Sorry for the vague ness of this request but this is my dally driver so i have no time to do huge in-depth searches but I have dun some im pooling my 3.4 out for a rebuild im at around 150,000 and It seem to go through oil and I have a leaking freeze plug in the back of the block. So rebuild time. I found a list a long time ago on what was needed for the grand am 3400 head and intake swap if any one can help me pleas do a part list and what cars im looking for would be grate. I was just going to go to the junk yard and look for a 99 grandam gt 3400 and take the heads upper and lower intakes and fuel rails do I need any thing else and yes I know I need to re work the exhaust flanges im thinking about pase setter headers and I also know about the hood clearance and the piston problem but im not sure where to get the new pistons

From GM a set of 6 pistons for a Grand Am GT is 600.00 (100 per piston). that doesnt include the pins and stuff i dont think. now a set of pistons that fit the 3.4L engine is like 500 - 550 (probably 600 with shipping and whatnot).

So you are better off getting Ross Racing pistons.

you have to install a GM Three wire sensor (one wire for guage, one wire for pcm, one wire ground) because the Gen III heads dont have a hole for the temp sensor on the head like the iron heads do.

if you dont know how to spell or have time to do your own research then doing a 3400 top end swap isnt a good idea for your "dally" driver ;)

Ok look it was 12 at night I just got dun working on my car I have to pool the motor out and rebuild it while its out I would like to do some stuff to it I did a search but I don’t have a lot of time. I was planning every thing out but I wasn’t expecting my car to take a dump so soon so everything got pushed ahead before I had to make all my final plans I would like to do the head swap and intake if some one wants to help thank you if not then don’t bother

And what about the temp sensor? There’s not a spot on the head where is it on the 3400 in the intake?

you can't just use any 3.4 piston or the CR is going to be sky high

I herd its more in the 12 range does any one know exactly or know the math to figure it out. if its in the low 12s then 94 pump gas that’s what we mostly have around here for premium and some octane boost should work but if its 13 or over forget about it just to much

how about he should post because other than Russel he know the most about this swap, you need to talk to one of those two or search because I know Russel has outlined it on this forum about 20 times

even 12:1 is to damn high for a Daily Driver you'll just about need race gas for that kind of CR. You need to be shooting for 10-10.5:1 at the most

Yeah 12 is very high I don’t know what I was thinking a friend of mine has a 69 vete with around 12 and he puts a bottle of octane boost in it every tank or so and he has his timing way down when he’s cruzing the town. He can post every one can post. I did do searching and have three pages of write ups by Russell but I have a lot more time now I decided it would be best to pool the tranny instead of the motor to fix the water leek still not sure where it is but its not head and not intake frees plug I guess but that’s off topic. And im not a nubie I have been on this board for a long time I just don’t post because all I do is search I have been searching turbo for over a year and some engine modifications until I came into this a little while ago grate idea. Russell is a genius for figuring this out making more power than the 3.8 and if you do a power adder to that like I some day plan to it just multiplies its potential

if i were allowed to comment in this thread still i would suggest buying parts from a 2000 or newer car, but then again im not supposed to post here.. so you can disregard the previous comment
