  • Those who have Comp valve locks

Copy of the e-mail Uzoma sent me.

If you haven’t read the threads on ClubGP about the Comp locks yet, please do.

Here is what you need to know. All the retainers are fine. Comp steel, titanium, our mod’d retainers, etc are all ok. The problem is with the locks and the solution is to go back to stock locks. Stock locks have been used on all of our modified heads and we’ve never had an issue.

At this point ZZPerformance is recommending you take off your valve cover ASAP and check for damage on the retainers which will look like the pics in this thread.

Symptoms are clicking or valve train noise. If you have any noise OR your retainers are damaged, it is very important that you do not run the engine any longer.

If you do not have all of your stock keepers left, please contact us for replacement pieces. We are working with Comp to also get any damaged retainers replaced but ZZP cannot send out retainers in advance. We have 81 customers with Comp locks. That’s a potential 972 retainers that need to be replaced and we don’t have that many in stock. They are on order but as of right now, we need confirmation with exact quantities and type of retainers you have. We also need your original invoice number for the product purchase. We are undoubtedly going to be hit with a lot of requests from people that didn’t order from us and I’m sorry but we can’t issue you guys replacement parts.

If you didn’t buy them from ZZP, please contact your vendor for support. As a last resort you can call Comp (Red Obert directly at 800-365-9145 X577) and speak with them. They are filled in on this issue.

I received this email as well. I've had my cam installed for 10 weeks. The valvetrain has been noisy since the install. Noise has gotten considerably louder last week or so.

That sucks, glad I went stock with the retainers and locks.

If it were me, I would stop driving the car asap. Serious engine damage can occur if one breaks. Remove the locks, make up a bill for the labor and parts, attach the locks and the bill to a brick and "return the merchandise" the old fashioned way.

I haven't taken off the drivers side yet, but only my #4 intake retainer is showing minor damage at this point. This is going to be a ***** with the heads on. I don't want to waste a weekend, I think I'm just going to take it in the rear and take it to a machine shop or something.
