I wouldn't go over .500 without changing the springs. I plan on installing LS1 springs with my GT cam which are supposed to be good to .520

I think the stock springs are good up to near .520 also (i think our springs might be very similar if not the same as the ls1 springs.) but mine had 70K miles on them, so I am just freshing things up.1997 Chevrolet Camaro v6 - 13.8@104MPH

I did change the springs to 150# per the recommendation of a Comp Tech and put in new lifters as also recommended. It has great thump @ idle and suprising power increase @WOT. I can now chirp 1st, 2nd and 3rd without any effort. I'll post new 1/4 mile times when I have them.
