  • Valvetrain chatter or lifter/pushrod/rocker?

I've put about 2500 miles on the heads/cam in the last 2 months. Lately I've been hearing some ticking coming from the engine, but I'm not sure if it's normal or not. It's only been doing it around the last 1000 miles or so, and the car seems the same as when it was first started. My initial though was that it was a bad header gasket, but that didn't fix it.

It is quite obvious now that it's directly related to engine RPM. You can hear it starting at about 1500 going up through 2800 or so. Above that, the ticking is both too fast and too quiet to be heard over the exhaust.

I've got Comp Cams OE lifters, High-Tech pushrods, and 915 valve springs. All the rocker arms were tightened down as per specs.

It sounds like it's coming more from the driver's side, but it may be coming from both sides. I pulled off the driver's side valve cover to see if the rockers were tight and everything seemed good. My next plan is to get some new rocker arm bolts and check the pushrods to see if one is bent or something.

Guys with GT2s or similar cams, do you hear any chatter, or is there something wrong with my car?

On a new engine you should reajust the valve train after 2000 miles.
You don't have to but it's a good idea.
At that point your 100% broken in.

I have all kinds of valve noise.
I essentially have the gt2 cam.
Ticks at idle, gets LOUD at around 2000 rpm.
Check pushrods, they are fine, using ls1 springs.
Its NOT a lifter noise that I am getting. I don't know what to do about it, so I leave it.

I think it has to do with the steep ramp rates on the cam. I really don't know because I had the noise for a while, took the valvetrain apart and found nothing wrong. I have no idea what it is.

my valvetrain has made a lot of noise since I fired it up the first time. Its got about 4000 miles on it and no problems so far. Ive got Comp 26918 springs, titanium retainers, and Comp pushrods with the stock lifters that had 60k on them when i did the swap.

                    Okay let me ask...

Is the ticking noise very loud and then suddenly dissapears?

Is the ticking noise soft but steady and gets louder with rpm?

Mine starts off real soft and builds both speed and volume with RPM, up to about 3000 until it fades out.

Mine is almost non existant at idle, gets louder with rpm, and get really loud (acutally steps instead of fades up) at about 2700 rpm...
Does the same coming back down too.

What oil are you guys running? Have any of you torn down a bit and inspected pushrods, rockers, lifters?

I've used 4x4 lobes with 1.8 rockers on stock lifters so I don't think those things are the culprit.
