yes the magnet trick can be done. I remember seeing a tool being sold to do just this. I think i seen it at flatlanderracing.com but i cant find it anymore. But if yuou do drop a lifter you might be pulling more then the intakes. I still think its a great idea. Just be carefull.

Now about Hydraulic roller lifters, they dont always need replacement. Regardless of what other websites say or what you think you know. I have done cam swaps several times in the 3.8 engine and i didnt have to change lifters. And i didnt have any problems after the swap. And there are alot of other people doing the same swaps in the same style motors and dont replace lifters. So its not required to replace lifters, unless one of the lifters are bad or making noise, or just high mileage. So quit arguing about that.

Ok, but how would you know if the lifters are good if you don't pull the intakes?

I have a scaned version of an older chevy high pro book that says its quite all right to reuse flat tapets.
So what it the the cam makes a ware patern buff it down, we rehone cylinders insted of buy a new block don't we.
You have to repolish the foot of the lifter with #600 grit, I think there talking about racing engines that don't have 10's of thousands of miles on them. You will need to take that into consideration if you want to reuse them.
It can be done. They have to be in good shape to reuse them.

          It says:
"Valve lifters can be made more compatible with the cam shaft lobes by polishing the lifter feet with #600 grit sandpaper before installing them. Good used lifter that retain some crown or convex curvature across the bottom are quite satisfactory for reinstallation."

GREAT! That still means you have to pull the intakes!

I am leaning tord pulling the intake to the point where I am about to fall over.
What destorys lifters other than them being collaped is shock loads form extremely high spring loads. The shock flatens the needle bearings over time and the lifter needs to be replaced be for they totaly fail.
Don't have to think about that untill your running 300lb spring seat loads.
Your open pressure won't be a hole lot more than 300.
There are new roller lifters that don't have bearings, so the limit on the valve train just went up again as far as spring load and RPM's.

                my lifters after 87K miles
Do you have a better pic of the rollers?
To AZ, I never said that rollers wear out. I said that they get a wear pattern. The wear pattern is what prematurely wears the cam lobes. I just want to be clear.
</font>[/QUOTE]www.turbov6camaro.com/images look the the tuhumbnails it should be that top few pics and you can see the cam and lifters, the cam had a bad spot on it but the lifter from that lobe was fine, the rollers are smooth and no lines or were in them that i could tell

the first lobe in the middle section is messed up, but the lifter was fine

Here is how you know if your lifters are bad if you don't pull the intakes...

Do they make noise? If they do, replace them. If not, reuse them. Its not like we have a lot of options for lifters anyhow.

The new lifter rollers float on a film of oil like a cam, rod or main bearing.
You could have your lifter bores enlarged so you could take different lifters, like .886'' SBC 2.2 lifters or to .875'' for standard lifters.

You wont know if the lifters are bad without pulling the intakes. But if you KNOW there good because they have recently been replaced or very low mileage then its not a problem.

As far as your book sanding down lifters, remember we are talking hydraulic roller, not flat tappet.

Just stating some facts, the book is for a 60*-V6 any way.
The only thing you can realy do to rollers to get them ready to put in an engine is let them sit over night in oil like with a timing chain.
