• Bigger intake == more torque ?

EDIT: STANG PICTURES: (not sure what's stock or what's best, YMMV) Note to self: Learn to weld. And, OH, it's an electric water pump, or something, wait, just different. And, damn, a turbo, a blower, different intakes ... really gotta learn to weld.

Started thinking about torque, and recalled some stuff. I know that for folks who are running the air horns right on top of the intake manifold (you know what I'm talking about), long horns make gobs of torque, short make more hp, and staggered makes for a smooth torque curve.
I'm recalling the custom intake plenum made by the guy with the V6 Stang with the green engine and the filer on tb, that 12Sec posted.
Are there any aftermarket intake manifolds that will produce more torque? OK, well, I can answer that on my own -- no ... just ported upper / lowers from SSM. If I could weld (if!), could I make a nice custom manifold like on the V6 Stang or would I be SOL on such custom work.
Looking for midrange torque, not drag racing HP.

(PS -- I know an LT1 makes gobs of torque, don't remind me)
edit: Yeah, I did a search. Funny thing is that I asked about P&Ping my intakes about a year ago, right here.

funny thing you should post this.. I have had a similar idea.. see what you think of this..

lets examine the L98 (tuned port 5.7)
have you ever seen the intakes on L98's?
this is basically a regular old Small block chevy(350ci) bottom end with some different flowing heads, a rather interesting intake and computer controlled electronic fuel injection..

one of the interesting things about that setup is that all the injectors fire at once.. NOT sequential.. even more interesting is they fire once per engine revolution yes ONCE PER REVOLUTION.. so they fire half the fuel needed for proper ignition every time they fire..

it's an interesting setup and is basically accredited with that motor being a torque monster..

now lets come back to our cars.. in alot of ways the setups are similar(I'm talking about the intake design itself not necessarily the way the EFI works), though I think our intake tubes are shorter.. which usually leads to more top end hp but less torque..

now there are guys out there that have made custom intakes for those cars.. so I figure we could do the same for ours... the only problem I can see with designing a custom intake is the fact that the only way to really tell if your design is any better than stock is to put the engine on a dyno and start testing designs..

see we gotta find that balance between high flow capacity and keeping intake runners and such small enough so that at lower rpms you can flow air smoothly.. which is what the tuned port intake does..

anyway either this is something to think about or the ramblings of an incredibly bored car nut..

I haven't seen any out there. Bigger plenums make more torque, and runner length will directly affect torque. longer runners are better for low-end torque, and shorter runners are better for top-end torque. u wanna optimize the intake 2 make power where and when u want is made.

L98? Funny you should mention, we've got one in the garage (89 Vette). But they're a 5.0, not a 5.7, with TPI. Interesting further, they complain of lack of HP and use the mini-ram / super-ram intake manifold upgrade to boost power. But, monster of a stock intake, and the huge runners you could fit your arm through (it's a J-bend, not a 5" diameter pipe).
Wondering how I can make one for me ... really should look at our intake, torn apart (I'll go look at Magnus's pics).

L98 is a 350.

Wow, I was amazed when I saw a discussion about intake runner length here.

350 it is, I guess ... the things we forget. Still has ungodly intakes.

IDEA: What about a Delrin Intake spacer? Forget the fact that there's no damn room under the cowl, but what would happen if you lifted the upper intake 1 inch off of the lower intake? (Hey DEE97GTP)

there were also tuned port 5liters ... but those were relegated to f-bodies..

also alot of the vette guys claim that the main reason that the intake isn't great for top end on the 5.7's is because they were originally designed for the 5.0 and adapted to fit the 5.7's thus they don't flow well enough for real top end but they do make great torque numbers..
