What can we 3.4er's do to our engines? I know it can't be stroked. I want to gain all the horses it can dish out. I'm not interested in forced induction... yet. I'm considering it for the future.

Well as far as big power boosters other than forced induction there is always nitrous. Other engine specific things can be head/intake work with a different cam. You can get the rocker arm studs redrilled and tapped for big block type studs so that you can use full roller rocker arms and possibly at a 1.6 ratio. You can get the heads and intake ported. If you were running a lot of nitrous you may want forged pistons which would have to be custom made. You might also want a machine shop to enlarge the bolt holes in the rods to install ARP bolts. A higher volume/pressure oil pump can't hurt either if you'll be spinning fast. Other than fuel upgrades that's about what I can think of without getting too drastic. How much power are you looking to make?

no need to get the heads tapped. ARP makes a 10mm to 3/8's stud bolt. part #RS-11

Thanks!

I just want to make my 3.4 as fast as possible. I know it seems stupid, but I don't want to spend money buying a new engine. I want to see what it can do.

I want to add a turbo later.

If i am not mistaken the 3.4 is already a "stroker" motor and can only be bored out a little bit.

Super Six can do a heads and cam package.

heres what you dont have to do:

get your heads retapped for different studs. Comp cams makes better rocker arms that fit the stock studs on the head, and so do Crane. Crane cams full roller 1.6 narrow body gold extruded aluminum rocker arms are much better quality than comp cams, so i reccomend those. Tiago runs a set of them.

heres what you can do:

Comp cams makes a variety of camshafts, which range from mild to ok. You can also get them to custom grind a cam for you -- 170.00-???.00

Crane cams makes a variety of camshafts which range from ok to nutzo, most of the ones above the "ok" range (the ones other than the 2020 and 2030) cant be used in CA id imagine.. 170 - ???.00

Comp cams makes a 1.5/1.6 roller tipped rocker arm. -- 220.00 for either 1.5 or 1.6

Crane cams makes a 1.6 FULL ROLLER rocker arm. -- 320.00, much better quality than comp cams.

you can get the heads ported/polished by any machine shop -- price varies.

you can get the TB ported/polished by a machine shop. -- price varies.

you can overbore the 3.4L up to .040" over according to Nick Norris (what he said to James M. -- i asked James) - price varies

you can raise the Compression Ratio with higher CR pistons, but this will require the use of higher octane gas. - 500.00 +

you can get headers from Pacesetter, both uncoated (160.00) or coated (300.00) or from RKSport (400.00) -- coated only.

you can get an AFPR from holley for boosting the fuel pressure, Tiago has one of these as well..ill dig up the part number and post it here later. -- $75.00 (its the same part as the TBI 5.0L engine..uses the same fuel pressure regulator)

you can have the computer reprogramed -- 150.00 - ???.00

you can get a DFI system to have complete control over the engine -- 1000.00 -- ????.00

you can get better injectors, altho this requires a computer reprogram as well to use the larger injector or you are just over-fueling your engine. price varies with size of injector. roughly 250.00+

you can get a better clutch, like centerforce (400.00 or so) if you have a manual.

you can get a higher stall torque converter if you have an auto.

you can get a Jet chip, dunno how much these run.

NOS Kit - 5175 i believe it is. Tiago can tell you how much this is. good improvement for not a whole lotta money as compared to forced induction.

there are probably more things you can do..but this is the list of most popular and most discussed on the board that i have seen. ill see about getting the part # for the AFPR.

-R

The Pacesetter headers have gone up to $199.

If your going to do rockers or think about them I'd go ahead and get teh ARP 10mm to 3/8 (around $40.00) andgo with the Crane Gold Race extruded rockers 1:6 3/8 stud.

I am running those and did the above and am happy with them right now.

Q: There is no clearance issues with the 1.6:1 Crane Gold RR? No other valve train needs to be changed out at the same time? (ie. pushrods, springs, retainers)

by the by, looked on on Crane Cams page for the rocker arms, this is what it says:

Gold Race Rockers
part #25750-12 g
part #25759-12 h

g 1.5 ratio, narrow body (not self-aligning), with special 10mm x 1.50 bottom x 3/8" x 24 top rocker arm studs included.

h 1.6 ratio, narrow body (not self-aligning), with special 10mm x 1.50 bottom x 3/8" x 24 top rocker arm studs included.

-------

so apparently you dont have to buy anything, the rocker arms COME with special studs to use them.

my springs are upgraded, I don't know how the stock springs would like the extra lift. its not that much though.
