  • Buddy's '95 Camaro Engine Swap?

Hey, I don't have a Camaro, but my buddy does have a 1995 auto. I was wondering how easy it would be to swap out his L32 and put in the newer L36 that the later model Camaros are running. Will the engine mount up ok and will it mount to the stock trans that's already there (4L60E I believe, not sure on RWD trannies)?

I also know that we would prolly have to swap out the computer and wiring harness to match the newer engine. This would work to our advantage though because no one seems to tune '95 computers.

Also, on a side note, is the L36 3800 Series II used in the '96+ Camaros the same one that is used in FWD cars such as Grand Prixs and Monte Carlos?

Hey, as far as the engine fitting, I've been told that the k-members are different as far as the engine mounting up. I don't know if its true yet seeing as how I haven't pulled my 3.4 out of my 94 camaro yet. I have the k-member from my 3.8 1997 donor car, but like i said people have said its different. The tranny should mount up exactly the same I believe. I'm converting mine to manual, but all the trannys should mount up fine.

You're going to need the engine harness and computer from the donor car. The only thing is, with the switch to the 3.8, pretty much came the switch from OBD1 to OBD2 diagnostics. Most of the tuning devices you'll find, are for OBD2 cars. To avoid any issues with this, I'm swapping in the entire chassis harness from the 1997 car too. It's a lot of work, if you're looking for a quick project its not all worth it I'd say. Just do the LT1 swap or LS1 swap, it'll be the same trouble and more power out of the box.

the engine harness & pcm should be included w/the 3800. makes an easy swap. yes, all the w-body/f-body series ii blocks are the same. just have different peices to swap to make work. There are differences betwen teh 95 3.4 & 96 3800 cars w/the 95 3800 being a batard of them both (guess which one I have?) but it should be easy reconnecting the 95 dash harness to the newer engien harness.

Since no one said it already, you will need a new trans. The bellhousing on your trans has a bolt pattern for the 60 degree block. The Series 2 3.8 is a 90 degree block.

the 3.8 II may be a 90* v6 but it uses a 60* bellhouse, and the k member is the same for 3.4 & 3.8

Ok, so I'm getting some conflicting messages here. Aside from the engine, computer, engine wiring harness, and repinning the C100 connector, what else would need to be done?

Sorry, but that is wrong. The 3800s have the metric trans bolt pattern as does the 60* engines.

Just do the LT1 swap, then stroke it and whip the pants off of pretty much any car on this forum (except for mabe 1 or 2...) Plus, you should be able to find an LT1 for pretty cheap ~1000-1500, or a nice cheap donor 94-97 z28 (ive heard a few bad things about the '93s but im sure the info wasnt from a very credible source...)

Well, I guess it doesn't matter any more now since he got rear-ended at a stop light by an old lady doing 60mph. Camaro was destroyed. :(
