  • Never ending SES. ARGH!

Somebody... HELP! I have had my car in the shop countless times to resolve an SES code. When the code is read, it states an EGR code. I replaced the EGR and the intake tube as well as all the gaskets involved and reset my PCM. I've taken my car to the shop since the replacement of the EGR and I'm told the old EGR code is "stuck" in the PCM and there's not much that can be done about it. It's a "recurring history code". This is an independent tech I go to. Normally he's VERY good. I've taken it to my dealer 3 times and pay for a piece of paper that states "unable to duplicate problem", so they're useless. I only get this code when the engine is at operating temperature and I decelerate (freeway offramps, traffic, etc.) and it stays on until I shut down the car. It will be off when I fire it back up.

Well, here's what I want to do. I've pretty much given up on repairing the problem. It's been a problem for 3 years now with no resolution in sight, unless one of you has an idea I haven't tried yet. I would like to bypass my EGR warning light. I want my PCM to think everything is fine and dandy with the EGR and just do its job for everything else. I want to pass CA smog when it's due, so I need the light and connector to be hooked up and functional, I just don't want it to report any problems to the PCM. Do any of you know how to bypass this error reporting from the EGR? Maybe a splice somewhere or a well placed resistor? I wish I knew more about OBD1 systems. Any assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

no easy fix like that because the pcm monitor of the egr operation requires a variable feedback.
best way to fix problem is correct problem. remember that just because the code says "EGR" in it does not mean that you need to throw an egr valve at it. you could be having problems with egr control circuit paths or egr control circuit and monitor in pcm. there may be other problems not related specifically to egr system itself that may also cause this code to set.

best way to diag is for dealer to use tech2 to manually control egr operation and check at egr connector for proper voltage response from pcm. the procedure is pretty straight-forward. you command a certain percentage of egr operation on the tech2 and then you look for the corresponding correct voltage sent to egr valve from pcm. if you get unexpected voltage at egr valve connector, test for commanded voltage at pcm terminals. if good here but bad at valve, repair circuit. if bad at pcm terminals, replace pcm. if voltage good at egr connector and pcm terminals, watch o2 response, ign timing, and short term trim as you activate egr. if little/no response, inspect egr valve, gasket, and passages for damage.

strange_trp! Damn man, good to hear from you. From what you tell me, it looks like I'll need to find a better dealer to diagnose this problem. If it's a bad PCM or problem in the circuit, I can handle it. I just need to know where to start. Thanks for the advice!
