porting heads is something that you just gotta do a few times to get it down.. If you want to do some learning I suggest you get your hands on some old small block chevy heads from a junk yard and learn on them.. shouldn't cost too much money.... do some of those just messing around then once you think you got it down you can go for it with your heads..

for me it seems like the hardest part would be the 3 angle valve job... when it comes to doing that... I dunno.. seems like that would take a really steady hand and alot of practice..

I ported my heads, intake and exhaust manifolds as well. ;)

I did alot of reading on the net, looking at pics, and borrowed a book, "building a chevy small block" or something like that. It had alot of good info, but not all applied to our heads. I also had a few conversations with a friend who knew about head porting.

It isn't as simple as making the hole bigger.

I had a machine shop do my valve job, clean, resurface and assembled my heads for $100.

Unless you are planning 400+ HP, you don't want to get too exotic.

I have a few pics on my website, but nothing real detailed.

Do you have airtools? If you decide to do it, take your time. I won't lie, it was ALOT of work for me. I'm too cheap, but I know why they charge $600.

You can learn off your heads just dont take off too much. IT will probly take you a few try's too get them right where you want them. Make sure to have them flow tested so all the ports are the same.

Just start porting them then get them flow tested, then port and flow test until you get them right. I wouldnt do it. I ported my intake manifold and that was a PIA I couldnt even imagine porting heads.

If I was to go looknig for an extra set of 3800 SII heads in the junk yard to work over before the swap, are there any cars or castings that are 'better' or more desirable?

Tom does do great work but those crazy shipping people suck!! I got my upper intake back with a 1" long 1/2" wide chunk taken out of it where the tb goes onto :( my coolant tube was also snapped off , had to buy another one, and two bolts on the lower intake were severely bent and one was snapped off :(

Like DEE said, Its not as easy as just making the port larger. Velocity plays a key roll in the heads. There is something called a lift curtain on heads. Basically it involves low lift flow and high lift flow. You cannot improve one without improving the other or you will ruin your heads. You have roughly a quarter inch between the port and a water jacket. If you decide to do your own, do not polish the intake! When the injector fires it hits the wall of the intake port. If it is polished the fuel will stick to the wall and run down it causing a bad mix in the combustion chamber. Think of it like spraying a water hose at a piece of glass vs. a brick wall. The texture of the brick makes the water bounce off. You can clean up an intake fairly smooth...just don't polish. As far as the exhaust goes, polish it as much as possible. Air has more velocity with heat. A polished chamber will not loose heat as much. Less heat=less velocity. On a P/A car you can polish the combustion chamber. N/A...don't bother. Hope this helps. E-mail me at Schwinnmech@aol.com if you need any more help.

if your ever porting a 60* v6 head you'll notice a vain in the intake runner, don't grind it out!

                        but you already know that

How many of you who are P&P your own heads are having them flowed after the work is complete. I wonder how these numbers compare to SSM's work or other people's work. We are looking for a 3.8L V6 beta tester and we need some stock heads to have them P&P and flowed.

Good luck! It really is tough to get them to flow at their max potential without have a few sets of heads to experiment on.

                              Let us know the results.
