• Engine Swap

I've decided to change directions with my 96' Camaro. With over 90k miles, it seems fruitless to make further mods including cams, rocker arms, throttle bodies, etc. It's disappointing that all the money that went into after market equipment and labor will be gone but it's best to cut my losses.

I refuse to give up on the car and am currently looking into used LT1s, LS1s, or possibly a crate motor. I'll probably have to go with a new tranny too. Any information, suggestions are welcome.

This has been asked quite a few times, a search would be helpful. http://www.hpsalvage.com/st.htm gives a nice list of parts you will need and some tips. Parts will cost a lot, and unless you can do the labor, that will be a lot also. It would probably be cheaper to just trade the car in on a Z28 or Trans Am. But if you are dead set on an engine swap, it is entirely possible but not cost effective.

Best of luck with this and please update us if you go along with it.

It wouldn't be too hard on the wallet. I've see several LS1's with all accessories and a tranny go for between $3200-$3600. Not too bad. There are a bunch of other things involved, obviously. But the real payoff is the 325 HP with the V6 insurance. lol

Im in your boat buddy! My car just hit 119000 miles ! I had no choice in the matter of my next vehicle, but this car is perfect for me. I am currently saving up, but I buy v8 parts every now and then and store them if I can get hot prices (radiator, front susp. parts, etc) if I were you, I'd do the same, because from what I heard these 3800's engines can last up to 200000 miles or more with good maintence, which means alot of time to shop around no rush!
