  • PCM modes?

I have 2 questions about the pcm. First, i was told that the pcm does not use the MAF sensor once the engine is warmed up, so how could the maf screen removal do any thing to effect the motor negativly, once its warm? also does the 160 stat effect open closed/loop mode?
Question 2 deals with the egr. does a 160 thermostat cause the egr to stay open, b/c the engine is trying to warm up?

the maf screen isnt just about the maf readings, take the screen out, (clean it off) and stick it up to your mouth and either blow or suck into it....ALOT of restriction, take it out your engine breathes better and you get more power...the other questions Ill leave for someone else to anwser , for I am not quite sure ;)

yeah I heard to blocked 120 CFM of air. I just was wondering how it functions when the car is hot, but it seems no one knows how are computer works. Does anyone know of a book that talks about late model fuel injection?

Magnus will know how the computer works....and try a Haynes manual, it will pay itself off...total rebuild of the car and explains how everything works + all the wiring diagrams ;)

No, I believe you've got the MAF confused with the IAT sensor.

The pcm has to use the maf reading at wot at least. Otherwise it would have no idea how much fuel to add. Because it stops using the o2 sensors at wot. So it matches the fuel to the amount of air it reads coming in.

Also, if the maf wasn't used, there would be none of the complaints from people who have removed their screen... (a lot of mixed results in '98 and back) My '98 idled all over the place with the maf screen removed, and smoothed back out when I replaced it.

It surged at part-throttle (and autotap showed that while accelerating in one gear, the maf readings were going up and down, instead of steadily going up)). The screen (and the job it does of straightening the air flow) smoothed the readings back out, and eliminated the surging.

So this tells me the pcm is using the maf readings at idle and part-throttle too.

Yeah, I removed the screen and sprayed my nitrous for the first time. It threw a code at me. It ended up being that I froze the mass air temp sensor.

I replace mine as well. I think removing it screws up the pcm.
