  • POWERPACK AND TUNING

From what I read and hear the biggest problem of the powerpack comes from tuning. So what part in the power pack brings the bad tuning? Is it the cam? Heads? Intakes? Or is it combination of all 3 that cause the motor to poorly tune?

mainly heads and cam. the engine can't account for the big increase in air comming in, so it may feel like it's puting out less power, or worse, it can throw out an ses light. before doing heads/cam, I suggest just taking care of the rest of the intake and exhaust tracts, as well as ignition, drivetrain, suspension, and chassis. just before getting your heads done, put in 1.9:1 roller rockers and see how she feels. If during the course of any of these mods the car feels like crap or throws an ses light, reset the pcm and let it re-learn everything for a few hundred miles.

Nope. You'll have to get custom tuning. Some people get a lot of issues worked out with a maft+ and an autotap.

I'm talking about a custom grind cam, not the comp cam's one. the 1.9:1 rockers on the comp cam will **** **** up.

Ok, lets try to clear this up again. The ssm pack DOES NOT detune the motor nor does it cause problems. Just because it sets off an SES light (and it WILL set it off), does not mean the car will run like crap. If you pull the PCM fuse or reset the computer via autotap, the SES light will go off, only to back on again the next day.
Where tuning is an issue, is when you want to extract the MOST out of the powerpak. Your 2 options right now are 1) try to get Superchips to re-burn the computer, although they are iffy about since it hasn't been done for a heads and cam package on our 3.8, or 2) get the MAFT+ which will help greatly on tuning, but this is only at idle and WOT, which is fine for racing.
There is no down side from the SSM pak. There are your regular side-effects from getting a cam like a lump idle and it's a bit louder, but the car won't act screwy on you or stall out (as long as the cam specs aren't to big)
                GM 3800 PowerPak guinea pig<p>\"what cam, that\'s just a nasty mis-fire...\"
