• 98 v6 to 98 ls1 swap: anybody done this exact swap?

Yes, I've searched, and I have not found anything about this. There are a lot of different year swaps, and I am just needing info on this same year swap. It is not like the others, and not as much is needed. But I have some questions, and if somebody can help I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance ...

This is way to broad..... Ask a specific question so it can be answered.

My question is "has anybody here done that exact swap"? I would like to talk to who ever has about the parts that are needed in this year. Someone I might be able to talk to through e-mail or something.

If you want specific questions, then I need to know if the whole fuel pump assembly is needed to be switched? I need to know if the exhaust will have to be changed as well? I have 2 1/2" pipes but not sure if I need to change everything or just certain parts. What else besides the engine in general will have to be changed?

Just in general anybody else's experience in this exact year swap. Sorry I was not clear, but I was just looking for someone who had done the swap first.

The wiring harnesses, Guage pod, Fuel tank on 1998 models, Gas pedal, Engine, Tranny, Exhaust system. Those are the basics, from what I've been told.

I was told the wiring is all the same from the 98 v6 to 98 ls1? Was I told wrong? They said they would plug right up with each other.

I knew the engine, tranny, guage pod, and fuel lines (they also said the tank would be ok??), but wasn't sure about the exhaust either.

I'd like to know some of these things too. I have a 98 Firebird and also have a wrecked 98 Z28 in the garage for the swap.

98 is the bastard year so you'll need another 98 for the swap to keep things straight foward...

This has to do with the wiring, fueling, and fuel level sensors pcm/gauges.

I'm going to do this same swap in the spring. I already bought the engine and tranny combo last week on ebay and it should be here in a week. Now I have to save up for headers, torque converter, shift kit, and ls1edit or something similar.

Here's what I know so far, that I didn't see on your list:

1. You need the v8 k-member (under the engine). And motor mounts, if it doesn't come with them.

2. You need the transmission cross-member.

3. The pcm will need one additional hot wire. (Magnus has posted about this before)

4. An alternative for the fueling is to run a 97-99 (I think that's the years) Corvette fuel rail and fpr. This would allow your stock tank and lines to work, because the Vette used an fpr on the rail similar to ours, instead of in the tank. I have the part numbers at home and can post them tonight. I'm told they run about $200 from gmpartsdirect.

4a. If you're going to drop the tank for a walbro pump anyway, you might be better off swapping tanks and lines with a v8 '98 car, instead of getting the Vette parts.

5. Eventually you'll probably want to upgrade the radiator. I thought they were the same, but a couple of places suggested they are different.

6. Something about the a/c line fittings may be different if you retain the v6 heat/ac box. You may need some hybrid lines with the v6 fitting on one end and the v8 fitting on the other. I don't know about this one for sure, just heard it in a couple of places.

7. V8 lid. V8 tubing. V8 maf sensor if it's not with the engine.

8. Your throttle cable may reach, but I think it will be a little short. So it probably needs to be on the list too... I think it is on yours, but it's not on mine yet. I was going to check it first.

That's all I can think of right now, off the top of my head.

Thanks guys. I will be getting the engine/tranny combo on Jan.21 from tacreations. I'm just waiting on the rest of the money.

It is sounding like there is a lot more to doing this then expected, but I'm still going through with it. I've read at several places that people were able to do this for as low as $3200, but not sure how they was accomplished. The engine/tranny combo alone is going to cost me around $3500, and that's not including the other parts to make it fit, the fuel lines, intake pump, gauge cluster, or anything else.

Oh well, I have already set my mind to getting this done, so it's getting done. Just hope it don't end up costing me more then the trouble is worth ... but dont' think so

TTT. I just started looking into this again. I'm being quoted for $2500 for an 80k '98 LS1 and tranny, complete.

I'm also being quoted on:

Base LS1 K-Member $75
Radiator $125
Fuel pump assembly and fuel lines $100
V8 spring and struts $40
Posi 3.23 rear end $150
Hoses, from AutoZone around $60

Although I do not agree with the posi 3.23 rear end being necessary, that put me around $3000 including shipping. I guess I'll need the guage cluster and the throttle cabels as well. It is hard finding info for '98 V6 to '98 LS1 specific swaps.

What ratio do you have now? I already had 3.42 posi factory stock on mine... 3.23 is not a necessity, but the limited slip will seem like a definite necessity if you don't have it.

I was able to re-use my cables. I did flip the bracket over (the one on the side of the intake, so they were closer to the tb). I also zip-tied around it because the slots were pointed down instead of up after the flip, and I didn't want to take a chance on the cable falling out of the slot.
