i read that a 4.1 is the same block as a 3.8 and i guess its just bored out with the same crank(urgggg want a 3.8 stroker) anyways. i was also told 4.1s overheat alot and if i have a turbo i dont want that happening. i still wouldn't mind having some more cubic inches though. Ill have a turbo on my next engine. what should i do as far as boring this thing out 20, 30, 50, ?. I wish there were stroker cranks for these things. a 4.5 liter 3800 series engine would rock.

I seem to remember .035 is the biggest, b/f you have water jacket issues. But the biggest w/o custom pistons is .020. And no the 4.1 is not the same block.
ZZP has a 4.1 stroker kit or short block coming out sometime soon.Keith - 99 'maro - White M5 - bumpstick and boltons - 13.65 @ 101 N/A

the rule when boring any engine out is dont go over 30 thousanths.even in a little 1.5 honda.after that youll start running into over heating problems and sometimes possibly warped cylinder walls.but id check into it first because boring isnt worth anything unless your going to get forged pistons or something high performance of the nature.high compression for natural applications or low/stock for forced inductions3.4 firebird m5

Plus you're going to be changing compression ratio just by increasing displacement which may screw with computer controls on some vehicles.1997 Camaro 30th Anniversary...M5, chrome 16\" 5-stars Goodyear 245/50R16
http://members.cardomain.com/issycamaroman

Good point. I checked into milling the heads and using different ross racing pistons to raise the CR and I checked with DHP and they said it will have to be changed on the PCM. Freakn' computers. LOL Thanks,
JAM
02 Firebird GT

Placing a sleeves in the block replacing the cyl walls w/ a stronger material. LS1's do it, and so do some imports.
If that is really what you want to do, I'm sure it can be done. But the cost benefit ratio is going to be retarded.
I personally do not think .02 over cost is worth the money unless you have to rebuild anyways.Keith - 99 'maro - White M5 - bumpstick and boltons - 13.65 @ 101 N/A

whoever said that .030 over is the max is wrong. i know several cars that have been bored .060 over, etc. it depends on the engine.
basically, you can bore the walls as much as you want, and sleeve it. sleeving it will make the walls stronger anyway, but as was said, its expensive.

From a financial point of view on boring a six, and sleeving it down, it is downright assinine. You would spend much less money, and have more horsepower, by Turbocharging or Supercharging the existing engine, or even swapping in a V8. Unless you are just made of money and have nothing better to do. The options I've mentioned are much better than boring a 3800.2000 Firebird. Whisper Lid, True duals, TSP mail order tune, Built Tranny , TCI 2800 stall verter, B&M tranny cooler, Eaton LSD, 3.42 gears. I guess i won't bore it. didn't know it would effect it that much. thanks for the info guys. what kind of rings and pistons should i get. and yes i am going with a turbo. probably tiago's or something.96 Camaro 3.8 A4 Basemodel: 8 mm wires, Shift Kit, Hollowed
Cat(o2 sims), RKSport exhaust, IAT 5.6K resistor, Home Depot CAI
>>>15.375 @ 89.27<<<NEW BEST TIME http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/552491

ok, here is the thing with engines. almsot all engines can be bored over .060. that is usually the max. i have bored 454 blocks too .100 over with no probelms either. the trick is sonic testing the cyllinder walls too make sure that there are no casting flaws that would lead too a thin area behind the finished bore. in my experiences, most blocks (even ls1's) will have enough meat in that area too be bored .030 and be properly done with no worries about walls blowing out or cooling issues. i have seen many 3800's go as far as .060 with no troubles either. and there is no way that a computer in a car is going too have a hard time accepting +4 or 5 cubic inchs. there is no way in hell that it would whack the ecm out because of that. we have a custom engine that i jsut did for a member on here that has a massive turbo cam, .030 pistons, custom combustion chambers and full race ported heads/intake. he is dynoing it today hopefully. there have been no mechanical issues with that motor as of yet and i dont see any either.
if oyu are going too have a motor rebuilt there is only 2 ways too do it. the right way nad the wrong way!!! if the block was cast properly, and it is checked for wall thickness, then you should be fine too as much as .060.
good luck,
\m/attboost, you got it???

i was thinking of boring it .30 over but the other guy said it would screw with my compression and thats the one thing about engines that i know little about. if i bore it .30 and get those pistons then what should my goal be for compression, 8 to 1 stock 9.4 to one or ? i will be getting tiagos turbo or shanes later and want to built my engine right the first time and for the most potential. give me some tips and ill be sure to consider them. thanks96 Camaro 3.8 A4 Basemodel: 8 mm wires, Shift Kit, Hollowed
Cat(o2 sims), RKSport exhaust, IAT 5.6K resistor, Home Depot CAI
>>>15.375 @ 89.27<<<NEW BEST TIME http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/552491
