  • Piston Rings, Which Type to Get

I've heard lots about how our piston rings have a problem with blowby and pretty much suck. I'm getting a set of Ross Racing pistons and was wondering if the rings that they make for them (only one type i believe) are plenty sufficient to handle strong poweradders like 10-12 psi on a super or turbo or an 85-90 shot of nitrous. If not, I know Total Seal will make a set of plasma racing gapless rings for the pistons for near $230, just didnt think that would be necessary.

gapless rings will make less power than regular type rings on an NA motor, i dont know the exact reason, dont know if anyone knows but they dont make as much power...im sure the rings Ross sells will be more than enough...

gapless rings will make sure nothing goes by them, meaning no blow-by and total scraping of the cylinder walls of all oil, reducing emissions.

If you guys do some research on gapless rings, you will probably find that there is a problem with oil consumption. I called Total Seal about this because I wanted a set in my 3.4, especially with the amount of nitrous that I am running.

Usually, when you refinish the cylinder walls, you use a 600 grit stone for the final finish. With the Total Seal Gapless rings, use a 220 grit at a 45* crosshatch. They said that this will eliminate the oil comsumption problem.

With the Total Seal kit, at least for the 3.4s, the top ring is a plasma moly ring and the 2nd ring is a gapless ring.

This is the best set out for performance in MOST situations. Be prepared to pay the high performance price though.
