• How hard would it be to move the motor forward about 6 in...

How hard woudl it be to move the motor 6 in... It woudl still give room for the stock 5-speed shifter, I know a custom drivesahft woudl be neccesary... But the motormounts, tranny mount and crossmembers... how hard would it be to do?

i doubt it would be a pleasant experience. don't forget that you'd also have to get new fuel lines, stretch your wiring harnesses, shorten/lengthen necessary hoses, custom pan...

would probably yield even weirder balance, worse traction, etc. what kind of benefit will the operation have?

I could see fuel lines being replaced do you think you would have to extend the wiring harness? Its only 6 in.

I know you woudl also have to cut a bigger hoel for the shifter.

Its 6 in. not really that far...

Its jsut thoughts of the firwall/M90 blower problem height I doubt will be a problem, from some mini measurements Itook last night at the track.

        ah hah

what about steering linkage? honestly, for all the stuff that i've thought of, it wouldn't be THAT bad if you had a month and some fab-ability. as far as the wiring harnesses, i suppose you'd also have to switch computers so it wouldn't be a huge deal.

that blower would be vicious... i've always wanted to do the swap.

steering linkage... think you could jsut shorten it just a little?

I doubt I will do it, I am not a rich man... but looking into it... for others. Figure look at it from a different point of view, instead of cutting the firewall away

another problem is the hood, I say cut a hole and let the blower stick out Mad MAX style :metal:

word, you could do that or get a 2 or 4" cowl hood from VN fiberglass. :D

the biggest problem though, would be the motor mounts and x-members. i think it would be a lot of work for just an M90, although whoever did it would definitely be one in a million.

Eric I'd say the biggest issue would be the steering rack in it's entirety. Everything else is a matter of lines / wires (fuel, brake, alternator, harness, A/C), but the steering rack is a large mofo that bolts to the K-member. (Trust me, I know, I just went tubular). It's the one thing that has to stay relatively close to it's orginial position, even if you can modify the steering linkage (snag an Unbalanced Engr !ragjoint while you're at it).

IIRC, at lexus the IS300's steering rack is on the backside of the K-member. And it's just lines to a PS pump -- no trouble there. So if you move the entire Engine forward (new pan, unless you go really far forward), run some adapter plates back to the K-member mount holes, and then mount the steering rack, you'll be OK.

Another Idea would be to have BMR / etc custom make a K member for you that has stock suspension / chassis pickup points, but motormounts that are 6 inches or whatever forward. And then weld up some mounts for the rack yourself.

why in teh world would you want to move an engine forward?
for weight distribution it would be a terrible thing for the car, even if only moved a few inches, much less 6. the performance benefit would be negative for drag and handling performance.
you can do it with a few home made brackets, prolly, but i can't imagine why you would want to.

                        What abotu 2-5 in.?

Doesn't look like we need that much room,I jsut came up with 6 in. becasue that is as far forward as i think the stock 5-speed shifter will go, before being useless...
