    AutoTap vs OBDII

OBD-II is much cheaper, but does it give you all the features as AutoTap? It seems everyone here likes AutoTap the most, is that becuase people don't know about OBD-II or becuase it does more? When I look at the OBD-II website it kinda gives me the impression that its a crappy, home-made program, whereas when I look at AutoTap's I think professional quality. Dunno, could just be advertising . I'm looking to buy one of them. What is everyone's opinion?

And another thing, why is it so damn expensive?? I imagine the cost is mostly the cable??

IMHO Autotap is more "user friendly". I have the OBD-2 software. It took me a while to learn how to use it, so at first I didn't like it. Now that I have my favorites set and can just turn it on and log by tapping the space bar and then make a spreadsheet from the info I am very happy with it. For the price you can't go wrong, just join the OBD-2 mailing list and you can get tips from other users on operation. And the L67 enhanced file works on the L36.

Ok, on the same sort of note, I was just helping a friend tune his 99 TA with LS1Edit and using Autotap to see the changes....Is there anything available to tune specific things like LS1Edit does? We were changing every little thing from Rev Limiters, shift points, shift firmness, fuel curves, everything. So is there anything being made or that it on the design tables? I think alot of people here would love something like that! Also has anyone had a problem with AutoTap on the graphs, suddenly not showing the Knock Retard, and then it showing back up sparatically? It was oing that all morning to us, and we couldn't figure it out.

I knwo, and neither does AutoTap, my questions was "has anyone had a problem with AutoTap on the graphs, suddenly not showing the Knock Retard, and then it showing back up sparatically?". And a second related questions was, is there any programming similar to LS1Edit available or being made for our cars?

Well, I went ahead and finally ordered OBD-II. I'm hoping it won't be a disappointment by thinking it does more than it actually does. I guess first I'm just gonna figure out how to read KR, O2 readings, and other little stuff. Anybody have any tips for me?

Yes, make sure you download and install the L67 file so you can read KR and IPW's.

What you need to do is connect to the car and select a few items one at a time and hit the "start" button to monitor them. If you monitior everything at once then you will get real slow readings. So try to stick to the basics. Once you have a few items selected to monitor save them as a favorite file. Then in the options you can have it automaticly load.

Also turn on the space bar feature to use on/off logging. Makes it easy to monitor a WOT run while driving. ;)

From reading the autotap page, i gather that it is a ODB II system, just obviously a different setup than the ODB II program. My main question is, Can this run on my 1995 3800 V6? i'm pretty sure i've seen the ODB II connector under my dash, but if so, which software would be best. I drive an extreme amount of miles, Usually 1k+ a week in my camaro and I would sorta like a system to watch things as I drive.

I don't have the software in front of me but there is an options menu, should be on the far right at the top bar. Maybe under gateway. There are several on/off options in the menu like the spacebar feature and also auto connect and auto load favorites.

I think in mid 95 when they switched to the 3.8 they also went from OBD 1 to OBD 2. Anyone know how many pins the OBD 2 connnector has vs. the OBD 1?

Autotap is still patheticly slow. It's good for looking at O2s and KR and SES codes, things like that. But logging is seriously slow. I'm waiting for some high speed logging device. With the processors so fast and cheap now a days it's a shame auto tap is so slow. If it could somehow use the laptops CPU power to log. USB2.0 and firewire are plenty fast for logging at high speed. I don't know what their deal is. They are way behind the times.

Yes, when GM switched to the 3.8 mid year 1995, they also switched to the OBD II. They just say 96 and up to take care of there butts. So if it is a 3.8, it has OBD II
