Throttle-by-wire? I am looking at a PCM from a 98 3.8 for my 96 3.8, and don't know when GM changed to the new throttle w/o the cable. I would like to upgrade the chip inside, but heard that my 96 PCM is almost impossible to change.
If you're swapping to a new pcm and you want a "simple" swap you'll want a 96-97 with same tranny.
98 is still wire controlled, but wired differently, you would have to cut and splice the harness to make a 98 pcm work in a 96 car it isn't plug and play, but CAN work.

Damn! I didn't know that it was "that" involved. Okay, I'll keep my eye out for a 97 3.8 M5 PCM...thanx for the help!
I found PCM Modules for '97 3.8 camaros, i would get the part number from a dealership and try to see how much it is from gmpartsdirect.com, one is 160 the other is 125. I'd guess that the 160 is for an auto car and the 125 is for a stick car.
search for speartech, i know this isnt a cheap way to do it but im pretty sure they will make any pcm plug and play to what you want for a price like 300 or so i think.

NO, NO, NO!!
95-98 TB is cable (angled intake), 99+ TB is electronic (straight intake). But the PCM pinout were changed in 98, so you CAN'T use a 98 on a 96. Only upgrade on a 96 is to the 97 which is easier to re-program.
Do a SEARCH, this has been discussed numerous times.
Not that it matters now, but from speaking with magnus a long time ago you CAN use a 98 pcm in a 96-97 car, but you can not just hook it up. You have to cut and splice the harness to the correct pins on the 98 PCM. Way more work than what it is worth, but when there were no programming options a few years back this was looked into and from my understanding it's possible, just not ideal.
So my truck is finally getting some work done, after 17 years, Oil pressure sensor went out and it’s located under the lower intake manifold. Have to...
