  • How much timing to dial in to go from 87-93 octane?

I bought HP tuners for my car about a month ago and have been tweaking it a little, but nothing too drastic ('97 Camaro, car in sig).

First off I'll say I've never messed with a real ECU before, when I had my '84 all you had to do for extra HP was to turn the distributor. Going with that thought, I figured I should be bumping my timing on my High octane table across the board. Please correct me if any of my thinking is off. I've been running it for a couple weeks with about 3 degrees advance across the board and under WOT acceleration the knock sensor doesn't retard the timing at all, but under heavy load like going up a hill at 1800 RPM in 4th, I sometimes get up to 4 degrees retard.

So here is the question. How much timing on average can I get out of the 87 to 93 switch and should I maybe retard the timing a little when it's below my 3000-6500 power band? Since it has the low octane table to fall back on I'm not really too concerned, I can't hear any knock in these situations so I assume I'm ok so far.

One other thing, when I first looked at my high octane table, there was a dip from 38 degrees advance to 15, then back up to 38 at 4000 RPM, I changed that to 38... but it perplexes me why it would do this...
