Are these things any good? I've seen many shows like "Horsepower TV" and "Trucks" where they used these things and got a good amount of power out of them. How do they get the power if you can only adjust for gears and fan operating temps and shift points with these tuners?

omg. Search for HPP or Hypertech or Programmer or anything.

When you've got a new fancy diesel truck, you can get some real power. But for our cars, they are crap.

they are a lot better (more options) when you have an A4 car. The shift pressure increase is a nice way to 'sorta' add a shift kit without tearing open the tranny. The other things like fan temp adjustments, speedo calibration and tire size calibration are nice as well.

They don't give OMG horse power gains, though. I did notice a gain when using the premium fuel power tune. (no gain with regular fuel power tune). The premium fuel power tune was noticeable with and without the rockers/3" exhaust. I tested it a bunch of times with multiple tanks of gas. I always prefered the premium fuel power tune vs. no
      power tune.

I still use the other features...but not the power tune because of the blower.

300 + bucks is pretty pricey...unless you need it for tire size, speedo, fans, etc.

200 bucks for a used one is the way to go.

oh yea, I figure they are mainly just advancing the timing in the 'powertunes.'

Tomorrow morning I'm going to dyno my car (with wideband) both with and without the power programming. I'll keep all the other HPP3 options like lower fan temps and speed limiter on though. Running 91 octane for the pulls.

I'll let you guys know what I get..
