  • Planning on a cam: couple of questions

I am planning on buying the Comp Cams GT Cam in the next few months and I have a couple of concerns.

First: zzperformance says that the cam is made to be used with stock springs, retainers, etc. I want to use the stock ones if at all possible, but is this really safe for my engine?

Second: I have been quoted $455 labor for the cam install alone, and $700 for cam + springs: is this a reasonable offer?

I can't say exactly how safe it is to run everything else completely stock, but it would be cheap insurance to go ahead and upgrade them. Better safe than sorry, imo.

$455 for the install is a good price, but $700 for the cam + springs is a little much. The cam is $300, and you can get springs and retainers for $200.

LS1 or LS6 springs and retainers for even less; you might even run across a pittance set from an LS1 owner :D

Let me clarify, that $700 is for labor alone on a cam and spring install:

        CAM: $300

        Springs/Retainers: ~$200

        Labor: $700

It seemed like a bit much labor for springs ($270) to me as well.
