  • basic cam questions

i searched but there was like 9000 pages and i could find what i wanted.

i've been giving alot of though into getting a cam. but i need something street able and most importantly reliable.

my 1st question. how much does a cam take away from reliability?

2nd. the car has 40k on it, are new valve spring necc?

    what all would i need?
    cam
    pushrods
    most likely stiffer valve springs

    and then what?

i also need a rough price on just parts.

how much gain is there from a cam?

What are your plans for the car? If you are going to stay N/A, get a N/A cam (Such as a GT1 or GT2). If you are going Super Charger or nitrous, get a SC cam (such as the X-P Hot cam, my personal favorite). If you are going turbo, you need a turbo cam (not sure on that one).

You do not want to do he change twice.

As for power, I got about 50 hp from my X-P Hot cam (N/A). You can expect similar gains from the GT2 cam as long as you have the supporting mods.

As for reliability, you will need hardened push rods if you get stiffer springs and you will need stiffer springs with an agressive cam. The only reliability issue is you will wear out your valve seats more quickly but we are talking a long time.

    Hope that helps.

depending on how large of a cam you might want/need some tuning done as well.
