  • Cam swap gone wrong!

I have gone to a performance shop named "Willies" in FT HOOD area(KILLEEN TX). the shop asked for $600 Dollars for the cam swap, they said it was a simple procedure and that it would be done in a couple of hours.

It has been a week I have not had my car back. The mechanic told me the installation went smooth and they drove it and it ran strong, but they also said that once the operating temp was reached the began to notice a clanking sound from the crank case. they opened it up and found metal in my oil pan and that my oil pump might of have gone bad. they also said that it could of being a bearing that could of gone bad.

My car was fine when I gave it to him and now he wants to charge me an arm and a leg, he is blaming the ZZP GT1 cam for this. Oh! one more thing. he said that it only clanks when given gas. he told me that the computer might be thrown off by the cam and that this coulb be it.
I dont know what the heck, has any one had this kind of trouble before?

One of the mechanic said a comment that made me look at him with the gaze of death, the fellow stated "I have no Idea why would someone spend any money trying to get power out of a six when all you need to do is get an eight" he said this because I mention getting SS Heads & SS Intake upper/lower.

My Project is to make my 98 A4 TOPLESS firebird a weekend affair, so far this is what I have done.
SLP CAI, K&N Filter, Whisper lid, Jet stage 2 chip, PaceSetter Headers, SLP HIFLO Cat,160 t-stadt,B&M trans cooler, Flowmaster cat back w/resonator. SLP 3.73, SLP STB, S-Bars,LCA,Pan H-bar, BMR SFC, I am running 245/50/16 in the front and 265/50/16 it gives it the dragster look, and now the ZZP GT1 Cam

"There is no cure for the Mod bug!"
I am thinking of the stroker kit but I am waiting on a deal from them so tha I can jump on it.
Beating a V8 with a V6 is Priceless, the look on their faces is definately a kodak moment

If there is any Mod I should consider doing please let me know, but the question still stand. have anyone ever heard of this kind of results?

My daily driver is a 2000 GTP Daytona. SLP CAI, 3" Pulley, WPI/PP mani, 3" DP, HiFLO SLP CAT, Flowmaster Cat back,160 T-stadt,B&M Trans cooler,1.9 Rockers, CYA PCM, SS ZZP intercooler, GMMP(S-bars F/R), SLP lowering springs, KYB shocks, F&R STB, 245/50/16 on all fours. This car is all FUN!

I like to thank you all in advance for any advice for what when wrong!

    One Soldier at FT HOOD!

They Fuked something up.. Or maybe the clanking is the valves or valve springs?? Did you upgrade your valves??

Damn, I'm sorry to hear about your problems. That is the exact reason I never take my char to a shop. :(
The second someone made fun of my car I'd be out the door with my money, after giving them an earfull.

Did they install the cam with the 1.9 rockers? Did you upgrade anything else in the valvetrain (lifters, rods, springs, etc)?

There's no reason the cam would mess up the engine, unless they totally fuked something up.

No, they said that stock valve train would do fine, and that no further mod was needed. I dont' mind spending the money what I do mind is not getting what I pay for!

The sound is coming from the bottom end of the car, like the crankshaft or somthing like that. the oil filter was removed and metal was found in it. sound bad doesn't it!

If I have to rebuild the eng I will, but the stroker will go in it and so will the SS Pkg. I sort of wan to keep it N/A.

I asked them how much for a rebuild and they said it would be cheaper to replace it (REAL PRFESSIONALS, RIGHT!)I ask them how much and they themselves did not know!

Bad bussiness if you ask me!

If they used the 1.9 rockers with the cam, you'll surely be having some problems from that.

Was there any copper colored metal in the filter? I bet they got water or too much dirt in the motor during the swap and it spun a rod/main bearing. Him trying to blame it on the cam is BS and the tune being off wont cause a bearing to spin. Also like some others mentioned, the 1.9 rockers and stock springs/retainers wont work period, even the upgraded Comp 918's would have a hard time handling that much lift. That metal could also be coming from the rocker tips where the retainer is getting pounded into the seal and pedestal.

If you guys read closely enough the 1.9's are on his GTP.

The shop ****ed something up. Plenty of people run that cam without problems. I would not let them touch the car further, unless they at least own up to that they did something wrong.

If they don't want to work with you on fixing their mistake. Pay absolutely no more than their orig quote. And take you car to another shop. That is my 2 cents.

They want to charge me for doing the cam and having replaced the bearing & housing (a soft one they call it).
The mechanic said that they put $300 in parts trying to fix that noise. and that there is not much they can do for now. the bill is about a grand now and they said that if they go further it would really go up in price.

I am really going to have to get legal involved in this it sounds too much like a rip off.

All I wanted was my car fix and all I get is a retard for a mechanic.

Tomorow I have to go to the field and for two weeks there would be no resolve, that really sucks!

Oh by the way it did look like copper, the inside of the oil filter when he showed it to me. he said that he found lots of metal particles in it.

Hey guys I really appreciate the support and dont let my experience keep you from modding. There is no way this is going to keep me from having fun with my babies!

Thats bearing material and proves you've got a spun bearing. That noise wont go away without pulling the motor completely apart and if you keep running it, it'll eventually weld itself to the crank and tear up more parts than are already tore up.
