• Questions on L36 swap

The engine/tranny I'm getting from Nachius comes complete w/engine harness/ecm. How much wiring/stuff from under the dash will I need? I have a gauge cluster from an~87/89 Firebird w/the VSS speedoset up. The gauges should be just a decipher from teh 4th gen wire out to the 3rd gen wire in, including igntion. However, I did a search & VATS ws brought up. Any way to bypass that crap? & where does the aldl connector & wiring actually hook up? I don't recall seeing it in the holy book haynes schematics.

VATS is the one thing that bites people in the *** -- from engineering FutureTruck teams to engine swappers and all. It's the chip in the key, or the body control module, or something else that might let the car crank, maybe even start, but die without reason. There's a way to disable the key-chip with a resistor / clipped wire, so i'd search on how to do that.
Good luck,

Someone from thirdgen.org might be able to hook me up w/a VATS bypass module, I found him a 3.4 w/everyhing (link to it & the truck it's in so I might have that taken care of.

For the engine wire harness, there appears to be 3 harnesses that don't go to either the engine or tranny, I'm thinking this ids where everything else under the dash hooks up. Maybe in a few days r so I'll have pics to better show/explain this (unless Shanes hooks me up ;) )

Unless I hacked one up, it would be too wide. I had to reuse the 2.8 brackets for the 3.4 because the 3.4 brackets were about 4inches too long on each side.

edit: I've seen some "universal" engine mount adapters (read: sbc swap  ) from transdapt & others. I might just get a set, take the 3.8 brackets, dry fit, mark, & take to welder & say make it work.

ok, seen a good pic on e-bay of the motor mount brackets, LINK the passenger side looks normal, but what's up w/the driverside side? educate me please. Mogobs says it might be due to the steering linkage, & I caint find the holy book haynes for pics.

More questions for you L36/4th gen gurus,.....
I have a harness w/a firewall grommet on it. It has 3 connectors on it, a blck one, blue one, & white one. The black one has a big purple wire to it. I found out what wire that goes to using the haynes wiring diagrams & the PCM wiring pinouts in the tech database on the site. I still don't know what every wire on those connectors goes to, but here's a couple questions for now:

1)Where does the ALDL connector actually connect to? as in what harness/wires go from it to the PCM?

2) How do the gauages work on the 4th gen cars? i.e.- are there wires from the pcm to the gauges, wires from the engine to gauges......I just don't know, and don't have access to a 4th gen to study it. Tranny hookups are cake since all wires are there.

Thanks, not at home to compare notes, but basically answered all my questions.

I take it that the Blue Plug Purple wire to PCM 59 pin is the ALDL hookup?

I see I wasn't the only person to remove their dash, but you made a bigger mess w/it ;)

edit: Comared everything @ lunch. There are some differences w/the 95 wiring, but basically the same layout.

MOre questions, anyone have a pic of teh K-mbr w/the engien removed? Wondering if the 93~95 3.4s are different than the 95~02 3.8s. Got looking at the engine brackets again.

Also, for any other 95 3800 car, what do the white, blue, & black connectors that go from the ecm thru the firewall go to? the pin out tracing I got is slightly diff from Magnus's.

One more (stupid maybe) question: Is this ecm OBD I or II?

thanks.

didn't see this in any of the pin outs ( just in case) but where/which wires does the ALDL connector actually connect? Just thought be able to pull codes might be helpful .

THe other person I know of that did a full 3.4 DIS swap into his S10 didn't have this hooked up.
