  • Porting cylinder heads .20 over worth it?

was wonderingf if i have the heads upper and lower ported and polished to super six's specs and throw in a bigger cam prolly crane 216* 228*... would having the cylinders ported .20 and putting in ross pistons worth that 499 piston price plus boring. My second question is do i have to get new pistons if i bore the motor, and can you send me some links to cheap pistons if so. thanks

how do you port the heads .20 ?? also is you were to take .2 off the heads you would deffinetly hit the water jacket in many places ,

i'd imagine that you are talking about boring the cylinder walls, however .20 would be death to the cylinders , .020" is a safe plan

if you bore the motor you need new pistons

If you shave the heads .020", you'll pick up a little compression, and for the cheap cost of having it done I'd say it's worth it. You might need a different length pushrod than stock however, be sure to check that!

sorry, i mean .020 for the cylinders, and i will need new pistons. so is the new piston price of 499 worth the gains? also would any other piston fit, for example a stock lt1? thanks

The biggest thing you'll gain from swapping pistons is the ability to up your compression ratio without headwork. The extra compression is worth a few ponies across the board. Unless your cylinder walls are scarred and need to be honed and/or the pistons need to be replaced, I'd say your $500 could be spent on something else and make more power.

so do a cam, with new valvetrain and ported and polishing intake and heads, and leave the stock pistons alone? they will be ok right?

that will be fine unless you boost it a considerable ammount or spray it

The stock pistons are good pistons.
If you get the heads milled .020'' that would be a good mod and would help your compression.
You can't use pistons from one engine in another.
Things like the bore, profile of the piston skirt and piston pin hight have to be the same or match up to your set up, like if you are changing the crank shafts' stroke, length of the rods and bore.

well, if i do the pistons, where is a cheap set of them, and should i go .030 over instead. otherwise, i should just leave it alone and do the upper work. thanks. 500...plus i think i will put into the drivetrain instead!
