  • Cam is in...what a difference

I finished my cam install tonight on my 3.4L...what a HUGE difference. No more dead top end. For those of you who don't know the specs are:
    Lunati Custom Grind Cam
    Lift: .496/.496 w/1.6 Rocker Arm
    Duration @.050": 228/228
    LSA: 110*
    +4.0 Timing Advance

Cam runs absolutely awesome and there was a tremendous increase in power expecially in the top end...my main problem is keeping the thing running at idle. Looks like I may be doing a little drilling on the throttle plate.

Oh, another problem was the SES light, but that was expected.

What insane specs those are! Lunati does custom stuff? Can they make me a 3.8L grind?

How long was the install, any pics or guides you might have for 3.4 guys? Great job, btw.

What would be a good grind/cam for a 3.4 but avoiding the idle and SES issues?

Lunati makes at least 3 custom grind cams for the 3.4L and I think the same number of shelf cams. There is a lot to choose from on the 3.4L side of things. I will talk to my sales rep at Lunati to see what he could come up with for the 3.8L guys.

Removal on radiator, cooling fan, crank pulley, harmonic balancer, water pump, accessory brackets, upper intake manifold, lower intake manifold, lifters, oil pump drive gear, lifter, pushrods, front engine cover, cam gear, timing chain and then cam. Oh, and then it's a good idea to put it back together to get it to run.

Under $150 for the cam, labor was free, gasket sealer and gaskets, maybe $30. All included, less that $200.00.

It's not a bad tear down. I did it twice. With the right tools it can be done over two days. But, i think ti will cost a bit over 2 bens though. Is the Lunati CAM a kit? If not you would want to replace the lifters while in there IMHO. I assume the CAM comes with lube. You have at least 4 gaskets to buy (upper and lower intake, timing chain/water pump cover, valve covers). After running the CAM for a short period you need to change the oil and you'll lose some coolant.

All in all it's stillnot that much to do.

It idles very rough and it has a little trouble staying started when the engine is cold, but all you have to do is feather the gas a little. I may drill a SMALL hole in one of the TB plates to keep the idle up a little...that's what we had to do on the Vette when we did heads and cam on it.
