  • Need help picking a cam for a daily driver.

Which cam do you recomend? From the thread that was in wrong place. Heh heh, sorry!! Are we cool?

(pasted previous stuffs below so didn't have to type it) heh heh.

"Ops, my bad forgot to mention that part. Well it is my daily driver car, so no blower, turbo or stuff like that. So I'm looking to gain maximum HP of course, but keep it reliable.

Plus I know if I get too much lift I might need new retainers, valve springs, rockers, pushrods, lifters, and so on. Want to avoid all that crap if possible.

The only mods I have planned are:
    1. a granelli high flow lid & K&N.
    2. a HPP3 to run 93 octane and maximize computer settings, blah blah blah.

Mods I have done so far are:
    1. Got a 180 them (I think that is what 02's had for stock), if not then it's 195 or whatever is stock.
    2. SLP cat-back dual exhuast."

    Please advise.

    ;)

Ok, first.. I made your topic title a little more descriptive. There are many knowledgable people in here who can give equally good advice as I.

Ok.. so you want a reliable NA daily driver cam.

First, with any internal work you do.. there is ALWAYS a risk.. Something could go wrong and your car could be down for a while.. You could even junk the motor. It's possible.

If you only rev to 6000, then you should be fine with stock valvesprings.

I think a 212/212 112LS .520/.520 should work well... With .520 lift you will be setting the reatiners just on top of the valve seals but it shouldn't be bad enough were they get crushed.

            Now back to the cam...

Which companies/brands make those types of durations and lifts?

Anyone have sugestions of cams that work well in a daily driver without killing anything in the motor, while gaining some HP 10+ ponnies out of it?

            :D

              COMP Cams.

              http://www.compcams.com/catalog/230.html

Thats the page you can pick your lobes from.

No matter what cam you do there is always a risk of damageing bearings. Higher lift cams .600+ risk kissing pistons with valves.

well... you can put in stronger valve springs that hopefully won't break.. stronger pushrods that hopefully won't bend.

It's a risk. Just like many other engine mods you do... Trans and Engine work are the most risky. Intake/Exhaust is all pretty safe.

I run my current cam most of the time with no MAF T+.. it just helps you get the MOST out of any combo really.. stock cam or not.

You can't get a comp cam with that low of lift.. you can get one at .506 lift I believe.. those are nice.. VERY fast ramps though.

I HIGHLY STRONGLY recomend against a regrind. If you are goign through all the work of a cam swap, put in a COMP ground from a core.. Even if you have to wait for Comp to get cores, you WILL make much more power at the same durations AND the car will idle and run much smoother.

As per your question of how can you avoid smacking the piston and valves together with higher lifts...They make a tool that you can cut a recess in the piston with...basically, you have the ehad in place, the tool insetrted in one valve's place, and a drill to spin it to make the cut....we did it to a friend's WS6 this weekend to make a little room, not too hard, but might have to havr the engine out to get any room to work.

I'll throw in my $0.02 here...

Min runs the Comp Cams XE 206/212 Cam with no SES lights whatsoever. He also has locally ported heads, headers, and no maft+ i believe, could be wrong. He put down 350RWHP/400RWTQ on a 150 NX shot. The #s aren't OVERLY impressive but they do perform very well. NA i dont remember what he put down but it was a pretty stout number for no tuning and no SES lights. He drives it every day as well and has no issues whatsoever in it, in an automatic.

I personally would run a 212/218 .520/.528 112 LSA for a daily car, and tune it with the MAFT+, or have DHP tune your PCM. Talk to Zoomer about that.
