thats bs on the chain... it's supposed to run w/o a tensioner, but i think it's purely speculation that the bearing will wear out. in any event....it will need an upgraded chain, not neccisarily the double

Yeah man, quite a few people run the double roller, actually I am getting ready to order myself one. Its definately not $400 either.
When you get that block shipped to you, diassemble it and post pics of all the journals on the crank, good close ups. Make sure there is no scoring or grooves. I am very curious to see what has happened to it. Take a picture of any part numbers stamped on anything and post those too, as well as the cam journals.
This could potentially be a reasonable fix, and a good motor if built right.

A ticking could be as simple as something valvetrian related to something like a spun main or rod bearing. Rod bearings tend to be more of a knock though. Your shop teacher will probably be a GREAT resource for you when you rebuild this motor. I would put new bearings in regardless of how they look, just for peace of mind. Just take your time, get new bolts and bearings and follow your shop teacher's advice. Post up if you have any trouble.

az i wasnt planning on a full rebuild. i was going to plastigauge the bearings and see if they were the problem. and if they werent, i was going to find something else. do you think that i should tear it all apart? keep in mind that this will add like 6 months onto the time it will take to do so. as i am only 17 and work part time. thanks again

You have to pull it all apart to plastigage it.
Bearings aren't that expensive at all.

Machine work is what gets expensive, should the crank be messed up, but you said you will be getting a new one if that happens. So your ok there.

Its your call, if they look really good, you will probably be ok, but I am just saying a, "if it were me" type thing.

You have to take the main bearing caps off to plastigage the mains...
You have to take the rod end caps off to plastigage the rods.
Hence, your motor is taken apart.

motor came in today. ive got pictures comming up if my palm pilot ever decides it wants to connect with my computer.... is the radiator different from automatic to manual? he included the radiator and ac radiator. a 1997 automatic center console. and a few extras....such as a k member and full front abs brake setup. im pretty sure i know every part he gave me.. ive had my car on a lift like 50 frickin times. okay so: everything is rusted. the motor its self is fine. but the transmission exterior has like...barnicle looking things on it. the entire k member and brake setup is rusted all over. so is the brace that goes betweent he floorboard and the trans. tailshaft. the shifiting mechanism was all wrapped up but preliminary peek looks like it is rusting as well. which parts need to be sanded and painted? i problably wont be using that k member or brake setup so screw them for now... what about the tailshaft brace? it looks like its different than my manual trans brace... also. shouldnt i clean of the trans? how should i go about this stuff? also. the timing chain is where? under a cover on the front is where it is supposed to be right? thanks guys

Yes the timing chain is under the front cover, where crack pulley is, etc.

                                A little.
I think the autos have a an inlet and outlet for tranny fluid to cool on them.
                                The manuals do not.
At least thats how it is in most other cars.
