What's the best way to use a pushrod length checker with hydraulic lifters? The height of the lifter will change once the engine starts, so the results can't be accurate. Is there an easy way to do it, or do you need to swap in a solid lifter?
I'm thinking my pushrods might be too long. Had some ticking the last year that's driving me crazy, and I'm surprised at how far the valves are being opened when I torque the rockers down.
The height of the lifters shouldn't change when the engine is running however, on the #1 cylinder, or whichever cylinder you want to use, roll it over until the exhaust lifter just barely opens. Put the length checker on the intake side and you just adjust the length until you have the amount of preload you want. After you get that, pull the checker out and check what length it is and order that long of a pushrod.
