  • Comp. "R" Lifters

I have comp. R series lifters. I've got some valvetrain noise and I'm almost POSITIVE that its from my lifters.

Somebody explain preload and how it effects how I tighten rocker bolts please?

I torqued rockers to what my Haynes manual said, 12 ft. lb's + 90 degrees, like I always have.

This is like the third go around on rocker bolts (No one in town could even order them  ) so maybe that may have something to do with it.

I ordered new ones and they should be here mid week.

Change the preload by getting a different length pushrod. Use a pushrod length checker to find out just how long that needs to be.

Definitely not a good idea. I ordered a couple extra sets just so I can have them ready to go. I'm kind of surprised you haven't broken one from the extra twisting.

Ya, I'm against reusing the bolts but it was either no car or re use the bolts. No parts shop in town had them (live it the city) and no dealerships in the Tulsa area stocked them. The parts shops couldnt even special order them. Aint that some ****?

At one time i had 7.05 harden rods and they were to long. They kept the valves open and the car would flat out die after it warmed up. The 7.0's i have now fixed it. Until my next paycheck I cant afford anything like the leangth checker.

It didnt start til I reused the bolts. Thats what is making me think it has something to do with them.

That's a pretty good indicator that you may just need new bolts. Once the bolts stretch the torque you get when you tighten them could be all screwed up.

I figured thats what it was.

All the rockers had oil on them. I monitered them while the car ran and saw or felt no play other than normal side to side.

If this doesnt fix it I'll pull the intake and check out the lifters. I've heard bad stuff about the retainers on the Comp R's.

If they are bad, I have a full set of almost new Comp-OEs for sale, not the OER's. They are probably quieter and easier to use, since they are a direct replacement.

AZ3.8 - If I had some money I'd probaly take you up on it.

I have my old stock ones still.

I listened more today on the way home from school and I had the distinct sound like a lifter. I'm going to pull the intake later and check them out.

I read a post on www.camaroz28.com about these lifters and most people said they are ****. Do a search for Comp R and its the stickied post.

R's are suppose to be tougher. They are a pain in the *** from what I hear.

Mine were silent for about 10,000 miles.

Its more than noisey now, its tapping.

The OE-Rs are oil restricted so they supposedly stay pumped up better at higher than stock rpms, they also have a higher internal preload, causing the install problems.

The OEs are direct factory replacement lifters as far as size goes. Just better quality (I think) and cheaper than stocks.

It starts tapping after higher RPMS so I think something in the lifter is malfunctioning and its bleeding off.

I'll find out in a few minutes. Oil pressure is always good in my car. Barely dips below 60 at idle and nothing lower.

All my lifters look fine on the outside. I'll see if putting my stock ones back in that side fixes anything.

Except that he's reused his rocker arm bolts too many times and may have a couple loose ones because of it. ;)

When it's quite for a long time then starts tapping when you change a bolt, it's not normal.
