• cost on a rebuild?

can anyone guesstimate the dent in my wallet for a full motor rebuild with forged pistons and crank and rods, and with a cam in there too? i was figuring somewhere around 2-3grand. also, where do i go to get good info on performance rebuilding. i've done a motor b4, but that was just a stock rebuild for a friend, so i just followed the manual and replaced stock parts. i need to get some research done. thanks in advance!

you thinking of p&p the heads and intakes as well? 3k for just the rebuild without the heads/intakes being done. If they get done, then you will be pushing 5k. Both figures are if you were to do everything yourself and no shops.

Forged crank is not available yet.
Forged pistons and rods will run you over a thousand easily in parts alone. With the cam and valvetrain, I would say 2500-3000 in parts including bearings, hardware, etc.
Then comes labor. It will add up very quickly.

This motor is definately not worth building up if you cant do it yourself.

go figure, they have forged pistons but not a forged crank. this coming april the car is no longer gonna be my daily driver so i'm gonna get the courage to pull the motor and take my time with it. the whole reason i wanna do this is so that i can run 15 psi when i get the turbo and KNOW that the motor will take it. i wont beat on it too much, so i think the trans and rear end should hold up for a while, but its getting to 100k anyways, so it should be lookin fer a rebuild in a little while anyways just outta pricipal. i'm hoping to get the thing to be able to handle 500-600 hp and then hopefully i'll dyno it to about 50 hp less than what it will take. oh yeah, with the crank, where would i go for that? can i get one custom made or what? and if so should i find a shop around me or send it out to a good place? this is gonna take a long time to get done, but i wanna line everything up so i have a good schedule. hopefully in four years i'll have everything done powertrain wise: the motor rebuilt with the turbo, better trans, rear end, and suspension to keep it all on the road. are there any good books out there for performance building? thanks again!

yeah just take your stock crank down to Carquest and tell them to use it as a model for a forged one

a custom crank would probably be around 8-10 grand

DO NOT have carquest do any machine work on your motor. i have seen and heard way too many horror stories about them ruining engines......example: while rebuilding my uncles 1929 model A roadster the intake needed to be decked so we took it into carquest and they removed so much metal the area around the bolt holes actually started to crack when we torqued it down

take it to a reputable machine shop
