• IAT Mod revisited....

Do you guys remeber waaaaay back when the huge debate over the IAT mod?

it was putting the 4.7k ohm in the connector for the IAT sensor to make it believe its cooler out and boosting the timing a little. I tried it awhile ago and notice a very miniscule difference if any.

I was reading I think on www.installuniversity.com about how the LS1 guys hooked up a ls1 to a scanner and found which settting boosted the timing the most, and they found it optimum for the car to think its Intake Air temp was 36 degrees, and the best way to acheive this was with a 8.1k ohm resistor.

Well I was going to a DMV to get my registration, and such, and there is a radioshack next door. I figured I'll try it again, but I could not find an 8.1k resistor, so I bought the 2 closest they had a 10k, and a 5.6k. The 10k one there was a noticeable drop in performance, so I yanked it and put in the 5.6k one and I might notice a difference, I have hooked up my fullexhaust and replaced a broken transmission mount so hard to tell diffeences form on little thing. I feel a SOTP difference, when I took it out reset PCM, and put it back in and reset the PCM. I cannot tell gas mileage yet, I have been going to the track alot the last 1.5 weeks, so I made many stops to the gas station with only 3gallon fillups to keep weight down.

What do you guys think?, the 10k ohm may have been over kill, it felt like the motor was getting too much gas, but the 5.6k one felt pretty good. Do you guys have a way of tapping into the PCM and read the intake temp with these resistors in and the timing advances? 8.1k might be good for an LS1 maybe less is better for a v6, especially a 3.4L like mine.

too bad the only judge I have is my *** to tell me if there are improvements.

the SOTP readings are VERY decieving

Well technically you could say it took 2 1/10ths off my 1/4, but I also replaced my transmission mount. I am trying to see if anyone has a way to "test" it out.

Why don't you get a 10 k ohm potentiometer from radio shack. It would vary the resistance from 0-10K ohms and would cost like 2 bucks. I am going to test it out on my car, after this freaking winter dies out. My friend who has a 98 "Rustang" GT tried to adjust a pot. to 8K and the car was idling so much that it seemed like it was going to die. He took it off and he got a service engine soon light on. But he reset the computer and it went off. He got so pissed that he didnt decide to play around with it anymore. Me the other hand, I will use my Chiltons and look at some different temperatures in equivalence with the resistance and play around the MAF with a POT. until I get the best performance. More to come this spring......... ;)

Actually I am getting a Chiltons manual(in the mail) On sale form Amazon. I'll test it more later, but in the warmer weather around 85ish, my car was running loike *** I hooked the sensor back up ran it hard for 5 minutes then it started running fine. I'll look into the doodad you talked about above.

I'll pickup a 5.6 ohm resistor before i go racing on wednesday and see if i can tell a diffrence, right now i have the 4.7

logged with and without mod with scan tool. a max of 2 deg ign timing advance under identical loads is all the iat mod gives you. i read a constant 35degF. you won't see much difference in the times.

I have the IAT module from SLP...I got it way back in the day...a few years ago. According to my Scantool, when it is hooked up, the Intake temp reads 108 degrees. Any thoughts?

defective IAT module or problem in IAT to PCM circuit. you should be getting in the mid 30's on the scan tool.

This was one of the mods I was planning on trying on the dyno.

I contemplated on either trying a resistor, or trying the MAF... I skipped the resistor and just did the MAF screen.

If I go back, I'll try a resistor

When I do a resistance check on my SLP module, I am getting an 8.16 kOhm reading. Doesn't sound like this one is any good. Any other opinions?

does it say its for v6s? I read that the 8.1 ohm one makes an Ls1 think its 36 degres which is ideal for an Ls1 but not sure if its ideal for our cars.

I dunno....never heard that before, but I will call SLP tomorrow and ask.

8.1 is normal for the SLP one yes.
