Do any of you guys know if the 5.3 or the 6.0 will bolt up to an LS1 crossmember? I know the wiring and a bunch of other stuff will have to be redone, but if this thing will bolt up to my car, I'm IN!! Also the guys on gm-truck.com said a camaro 4l60E will bolt up to this engine so I can use the camaro driveshaft and not have to fabricate one. Anybody have any more info on this?

it should, the key word being SHOULD bolt right up, as the blocks differ mostly in bore

Well it looks like from what the guys over at gm-trucks.com are saying, I should have no problem bolting this engine in as the mounts are in the same place as the LS1. Also, the '02 and later 327 vortec engines have no EGR system (GM finally figured it out) Here is the link to the thread in gm-trucks.com if anyone is interested

People, the 5.3L motor is LS1 based! Just like the 6.0l! Either will bolt into an f-body car in the same way as the 5.7L. I've seen them swapped back and forth several times, no changes in the cross-member. And yes, the 5.3L has enough of an aftermarket that you could push an f-body well beyong the time that is #1 on our slips page.

If the bottom end of a 327 vortec is the same as an ls1 only iron, then will and LS1 camaro/firebird oil pan bolt right up?

You can call Texas Speed and Performance and talk to Trevor or Jason. They know most anything that there is to know about LS1's, and have run nearly every combo around. Really nice guys to boot.

Alright guys, I did some engine shopping and i found some great deals on this engine. I went to www.car-part.comand found some great deals on engines. You can get a 327 vortec out of a tahoe or silverado or similar truck for 800 - 1300 dollars with less than 40K miles in most cases. These are 2000, 2001 and 2002 engines. Plus they are still making this engine and coming out with performance parts for it. I found that a 4L60E tranny can be had for about 400-700. So for less than 2000 you can have an almost brand new engine and tranny in your v-6. Once i do more research, i think this will be a good alternative to the LT1 swap. Plus this engine is rated at 285 Hp plus 326 ft/lbs of torque. The 2003 327s are rated at 300 hp. I will keep this thread updated on my research. I am on the hunt for this engine somewhere near me right now.

Don't want to squash all this enthusiam but, have you considered that the accessories may not be in the same positions as the LS1 along with their brackets not being the same. Has anyone checked on this? Also I think you will have to swap out intakes due to hood clearance issues. These things can add up to alot of money quick.
That being said if this could be done cheaply it would be a killer deal. Keep on thinking outside the box guys.

You simply use an LSX intake manifold, and that takes care of clearance. The block is not much different, accesories can be mounted fairly easily. So no parade getting rained on thus far. This is a very feasible swap. It seems that the word "swap" scares alot of people for watever reason.

Ain't skeered, just want to know what the facts are before jumping in myself. If this can be done I wouldn't mind doing it myself.

I was wondering if this could be done at resonable costs... I started to think about that once my mom bought a tahoe with that engine. If you put the engine in a camaro you will be able to haul horse trailers with ease

I haven't got to the accessory or exhaust routing issues yet. I figure that if it will bolt up to the crossmember the rest is minor and i'll substitute parts or fabricate as necessary but i think it will be minor. The big hassle will be a complete rewiring of my car as it is an OBDI car. Anything will fit with a big enough hammer and case of bud light. :D

BTW I was trying to figure out which intake to use since i figured the stock on would be too tall. I think to keep costs down i'll use a stock LS1 intake and examine performance options later. I saw an ad for the composite LSX intake what's the big deal about it??

there are issues installing the 5.3/6.0 in the f-body, even if its swapping into a 5.7 LS1 based car.

The bolts are a little different for the alternator on the 6.0, the old 6.0's have weird cranks, and you need to use the 5.7 crank.

The 5.3 i am not sure about. As others have said, it is similar to the LS1, all are GEN III SBC's. heads are a common swap with the LS1 guys looking to boost compression. (5.3) or lower compression (6.0) The iron adds approx 80 # to the front of the car comaparing it to the LS1.

The wiring is still an issue, as you really want to use a f-body harness, to make thing a LOT LOT LOT easier, than trying to build one from the donor truck harness.

Go to the LS1 based sites, and so some searches for the 5.3/4.8 and you will get some info.

My inpression on those motors is they are iron block LS-1's just destroked. The LS-1 harness and emissions should work on that motor if you use the LSX intake.
