• Rebuilding the 3800

Hey, I've got a 1997 Camaro with the 3800 series 2 motor. I'm looking at rebuilding it to something in the area of 300+ RWHP. (NO LESS) and same for RWTQ.

I wish i could turbo it, but that is kinda outta my price range (actually the rebuild and turbo would cost as much as my cars worth. pointless) So i guess my question to you guys would be (given the requirements) what parts would you use to rebuild it? The more specific the better. Thanks guys, i'm really anxious ooohhh btw do you think the stock 4L60-E and drivetrain can withstand the power?

uhh, i emailed abbott racing about a rebuild kit for our engines. about ~ $650.

300 RWHP N/A will cost more then 300 RWHP on turbo'ed stock motor

just turbo the car 10-11 psi should get you about 300 HP

yea to reach 300 NA it will be expensive. Heads/cam/intake gets you to about 270 max (looking at Lance's from abbott racing as example) so then you would need nitrous, turbo, supercharger, or stroker to get above 300 rwhp.

Ok well then what compression ratio would you use if running a turbo at like 12 PSI? My Dad works for an auto parts store and can get everything at cost... so what parts would you change to prep the engine for a turbo? btw since i work at FedEx as a mechanic, I will probably be using a deisel turbo b/c i might be able to get one for next to nothing .

you could get over 300 rwhp NA if you tweaked some things. first, you'd definitely need to raise the rpm limiter. HP is a combination of torque and rpm. more rpm's allow more hp. I'd say shoot for a 7000 rpm redline. To make torque higher up in the rpm band, your heads/cam/valvetrain would need to be upgraded to do this. a cam with a 3500-6750 powerband would probably be your best bet. upgrading valvesprings, retainers, rockers, lifters, and pushrods will go a long way to helping the motor survive 7000 rpm bursts. get the combustion chambers thermal coated to keep heat in the cylinders and out of the intake. don't forget to have the rest of the intake, exhaust, and computers stuff upgraded as well.

270 is by no means a max. That was on a 60k mile stock shortblock. We could up the compression more and put a little more aggressive camshaft. 300rwhp is possible NA but for an every day driver it could be pretty outrageous.
