  • ls2 swap

huh... so after helping my friend with his 92' mustang 5.0 and riding around in it all weekend, i've decided to put to rest my dreams of turbo... alas! now, i'm thinking about bigger (literally) and better things. as you can probably guess by the topic name i'm lookin to swap in an ls2. i'll have another daily driver soon and this v-6 is getting tired, so i have the time and the incentive to put a new motor in. unfortunately, i'm completely in the dark for most of this.

    1. LS2 or LS6? i'm thinkin about camming and P&P the intake right off the gate for whichever one i get. headers too probably. LS7's are too expensive

    2. can i run circle tracks with these motors? again, i'll have a daily driver, i wanna have fun with this car on the track and as a sunday cruiser.

    3. i have NO idea what trans goes to what engine... can you mate up any trans to any engine provided you have the right bellhousing or is there more to it? any recomendations? along those lines, as long as i'm doing a full motor/tranny swap, how much more work would be involved in switching to a manual other than the obvious clutch hardware install?

    4. if i get a crate motor, where can i get a new pcm for it?

    5. probably the most important haha, will the damn thing fit???

    6. kinda side thing but... i've heard talks about how the LS2 is supposed to have that displacement on demand technology... would a crate motor likely have that provided the pcm had the necessary programming?

    7. what other hardware will i have to upgrade to accomodate? i know i'll need new springs and probably a new driveshaft/rearend. probably a fuel pump too... anything else?

i know i'm asking alotta things here but thanks so much in advance!

have you been to LS2.com? I bet they would be able to help a lot more than us v6-ers. I bet someone who had blown their ls1 has dont the swap. it would be pretty much the same thing.

ls6 block is basically the same as the ls1 inside and out, except for some ventilation holes in the webbing which some say makes the block weaker. (ls6 heads and intake are better than the ls1, but those fit on the ls1 block with no problem.)

        ls2 has a little more displacement. 364 vs 346.
There is a 402 stroker based off the ls2 too. The outside dimensions are the same. The cam sensor is moved to the front vs. the rear, and the knock sensors are moved to the sides instead of the valley cover.

Crate engines come with the ECU/PCM when bought from GMPP. LS2 is a great engine and from a quality standpoint is superrior to the LS1. With the LS1 LS6 or LS2 engines a T-56 tranny would be it's match. If you're looking to beef up that engine you may want to send the tranny to Tremec to have the internals beefed up. You can run circle tracks with those motors. As far a hardware there are too many parts to list. You may want to do a search for Ls1 swaps and read what some of the other guys have done. IMO I think it's cheaper to buy a F-Body with a v8 and do the swap from there.

yeah, it'd probably be cheaper and less time consuming but the car means alot to me and besides, i wanna do this all on my own. except for the motor work (i dont have the tools or the experiance to be messing with engine internals) i'm gonna go this one by myself. Thanks for the Tremec idea.
One other thing: from a cost/parts availability standpoint, the LS1 is looking better and better... should i just get an LS1 or save for the LS2?

If i would of done a swap i would of gone with an LS1. People have done it before, plus your going to be able to use the parts off of a stock V8 car.

Not trying to be an *******, but it seems like you need to do a lot more reading on the subject. Kudos on starting with the questions, but take your time. YOu really don't want to get in over your head with an expensive project like this.

Maybe you should check out http://www.turnkeyenginesupply.com/ . They have the engine with the pcm, coils, connectors. Everything you'll need engine wise.
