I decided to drop the tank and do the swap. I never pulled the tank all the way out, but I got it down enough to remove the pump. Now I have the assembly out and I bored out the hole on the plastic housing. My question is.. What is that housing for??? It looks like it was designed to keep fuel from getting around the pump, only in it. I am decideing if I will reuse it or not...

i was thinking the housing is to keep fuel in there from the return feed line to help cool it off perhaps.
I re-used the housing to allow it to mount up easily. I took the stock pump out and put the walbro in, it fit in the top part nicely but was too short so I dremeled out a little mouth near the bottom so the sock could extend both ways.Keith - Chicago
HP Tuners - PCM Reprogramming
97 Firebird V6 to LS1 swap
V8 9.967@132.78 1.322 60\' NA Heads/Cam
V8 10.295@128.48 1.363 60\' NA Cam Only
V8 10.987@119.31 1.422 60\' NA Stock Internals
V6 13.674@98.22 NA
V6 12.394@104.91 N20 100HP

Yeah I noticed that the return line went into it. I guess it keeps it cool when you have low fuel in the tank.
Anyways I had the plastic housing all set up, but I wasn't too happy with how sturdy it looked. So I decided to use two hose clamps to hold the pump onto the metal bracket, and then I just put the sock on the end. It looked really sturdy that way. I finished the installation and it works wonderfully. The pump even sounds meaner than the stock one. .
Putting everything back together was a TON easier than taking it apart.
Now I just have to get the exhaust welded back on. :(
Car sounds very mean with the exhaust off by the way, but you can feel the vibrations from it in the car. VERY loud.
My dad has changed a lot of fuel pumps and he said this is the hardest one he has ever seem. The only thing he can imagine being harder is a corvette, but I hear they have an access panel. Good thing I did all the work.
