  • SBC 4th gen conversion.

    Hey everyone,

I have a 350 engine out of my 2nd gen camaro that i am rebuilding currently. I have already purchased a new crate engine for the 2nd gen, so i have an extra small block to do smoething with. I have been searching online because I am interested in installing it in my 94 camaro. Ive found several people who have done it, i just need a little more insight, if possible.

First off, before people start shouting out about cowl interference, it can be fixed. Either by using a low profile distributor cap or by notching the cowl paneling.

Now, I have been told that I need an LT1 crossmember, however no one can tell me if the small block motor mounts are set up like an LT1's are. Does anybody know for sure one way or the other? This is my main concern, everything else should be failry simple, transmission will fit just fine, may need to slightly modify the crossmemeber.

If anyone has relative insight as to this post, please reply with as much knowledge as you can. However, if you are the type to say it cant be done b/c of this and this, then dont waste my, or anyone elses time. It can be done, I have seen it, and it is pretty easy, easier I think than an LT1 swap, as theres no computer stuff to deal with.

hey, i can't say for certain about the mounts, but i can give you a sight that you can probably get answers at...it is a z-car sight, but these guys are very open minded... www.hybridz.org
they are very knowledgeable about putting v8's in small places!!! you may have to sign up to post by the way.

For the lt1 small block question...

I would go to www.camaroz28, maybe check out the 3rd gen, or even 2nd gen section, I know a couple peopel have swapped lt1s into 3rd gens so that might give oyu some insight into the motor mounts.

IT can be done, seen a 502 big block in a 4th gen with stock SS hood.

The block mounts are the same. I put an LT1 in a 79 corvette and we used the old motor mounts. We had to get a different oil pan to clear eveything, but the engine mounted in exactly the same way. Hope this helps.

That is one of the best things about the chevy 350. It doesn't change(didn't). The block I do believe has been the same forever. The only changes that were made were internally with the crank area.

oh, and another question...for the LT1 crossmember...around what price range am I looking to pay for a stock stlye LT1 K member? Does speed automotive have those? I think i will probly end up going with the BMR tubular K member thoguh...unless the stock LT1 one is wayy cheaper.

                thanks!
