I am rebuilding my blown up 3.4. What measure should i take when rebuilding as far as making sure the heads/valves are good and so on. I know the cylinder walls are golden and the bottom end is fine except for the one piston. I was planning on replacing all of the piston rings and the piston in the bottom and then maybe having some headwork done like increasing the compression and a port/polish if i can afford it. Would you guys recomend port/polish yourself with teh standard abrasives kit or paying $ for someone else to do it? Also, what should it cost to have the heads shaved to bump my compresion up a point. Thanks for the help!

I reccomend teh pistons too.
A freind of mine shaved the head on a 240sx for about $220.
NOt that thats too useful, but remeber to keep the intake manifold and inline with the heads and all that good stuff. I would port and polish the heads if you can afford it.
Maybe through in a cam and some rolelr rockers?

You will need to check the head and block decks for straightness, to make sure nothing's warped. Also, if you are going to be shaving the head and/or block decks, you need to check the clearances, like Tiago said, same thing for that new cam.
As to the port and polish job, unless you've done one before, or you've got a second set of heads handy, I'd take them to a professional. You don't want to muck your heads up.
Find out if there is a speed shop or engine builder somewhere in your area, and talk to them about doing your rebuild. They can give information on what might or might not work, who can do it, they might even be able to do some of it.
Don't get sucked into high-dollar parts that you don't need.
It's one thing to go with high-performance or racing parts that are built for one level above what you're planning on driving at, just to give you a little safety margin, but you can literally spend several thousand dollars on parts that you'll get nowhere near being able to use to their full potential.
Oh, one other thing you might consider putting on is bigger injectors, I was looking into doing that on my 3.4 before I got my new Camaro. Summit has 19lb/hr injectors for about $250 for a set of 8. I figure 19 pounds would be enough to help the engine considerably, but any more, and you stand a serious risk of the computer not being able to keep up with them.Wife and a dog, they both think they\'re Kujo.

1999 3.8 A4 Y87
Navy Blue Metallic
BFG G-Force KDWS 275/40/17s,
WS6 Wheels (17x9)
Phoenix Transmissions 2400 Stall Converter
FRA, Holley Powershot filter, Whisper Lid, Ported Throttlebody
2000 manifolds, Flowmaster, WS6 Tail Pipes,
MSD 8.5mm Wires, MSD Coils, Autolite plugs
Performance Cryogenics treated rotors
1LE Sway Bars and panhard rod, 1LE front springs w/SLP Bilsteins, stock rear springs w/ 3rd Gen Bilsteins, BMR STB, KBDD SFCs, 1LE rear lower control arms, 1LE front lower control arms
1968 Chevelle Malibu 327 TH350
