    I have the chiltons, and the hanes. they do not agree on the method or setting. I purchased a long block from arrons, and they could not tell me where they left it. They did send a cover you a$$ letter that said all GMs have been set this way, but we are not responcible. I called a dealer ship, and the mechanic I spoke to kept giving me the valve cover speck. I have built quite a few motors, and have about thirty years experience as a shade tree mechanic. I know that this is not rocket science. Can any one help me out here. As yuall know setting the valve lash after the motor is in the car is considerabley more difficult. Sorry I cant type or spell. oh yea it is a stock 96 3.8

    No need to set the valve lash. Just torque the rocker arm bolts to spec and that's it.

      thank you for replying so quickly. I am assuming that you are talking about doing this without the push rods installed, and if so then how do you get them in? If not do you do this at TDC combustion? Because if the push rod is trying to open a valve then just torqueing the rocker arm will not even get the valve open.

        To make it perfect, you need a pushrod length checker and you need to get about 1/4-1/2 turn preload on the lifters before the rocker bolts get tight. Torque each one in the sequence that you would set the valves like if it was a flat tappet or solid roller. ie. right when the exhaust opens torque the intake and right before the intake valve is closed torque the exhaust.

          What happens if you just torque them if they are not in sequence?

            If you torque them out of sequence they will come loose. You need to torque them when that valve is open or else they will not be tight enoguh. Rotate the motor slowly by hand until you see the pushrod come up then torque to spec.

                Thanks for the input. I just left it like arrons set it up. the motor has good compression, and turns freely by hand. Therefore the valves are set in the neighbourhood. opening, but not hitting the pistons. To clear up some of the issues here you alwayse set your valves at TDC combustion. Cams have a built in overlap during TDC exaust. setting them when they are open sounds like muffler bearings to me
