think I could get a refund or something for them giving me bad information?
I know youre right, its making me scared to start the dam thing up, I dont know if I should, I should probably take it all apart again and re-do the gaskets

i went to oreillys and asked them if i could get new head gaskets, and they said "why would it be a bad idea to use red rtv on h/gs?" I said: "cause the red rtv is only rated at 650F, and combustion chamber temps get alot hotter".
they said to come back monday and talk with the store manager.

i started it up, it had a ticking sound (I had a pushrod that was scratched, i think that might be it). It kept on smokeing from the engine bay, it would come and go.
on initial startup i had smoke out of the exhaust, but after a few seconds it stopped.

I called the store manager and he said not to use RTV on H/Gs cause it will damage "the rings". I guess he means piston rings?
He says he will have to call the district manager to see if I can get a refund.

i got new gaskets from Oreillys under warranty. But they wouldnt replace my head bolts!! The store manager said that the head bolts look fine, and can be reused. I'm like: "arent they Torque to Yield" bolts, cant they just be used once!
I got some of the permatex copper gasket spray.
The store manager told me not to use any of that Shellac!!
Is he an idiot?

I remember way back when aluminum heads were first being used, blown head gaskets were the norm. It was recommended to use the copper spray on the head gaskets at installation. The problem at the time was that old technology head gaskets were being used and couldn't cope with the different heat expansion coefficients between the aluminum heads and Cast iron blocks. The copper spray helped keep things sealed.
But today's gaskets are designed to withstand alot more of every thing (heat, movement from heat expansion, pressures, etc...) than that of the old gaskets of yesteryear.
I say don't use it.
